The Super Bowl is, year in and year out, easily the most bet on sporting event of the year. This season, it would be hard to get a better matchup than what we are about to receive come February 7. The Kansas City Chiefs will be led into battle by young superstar QB Patrick Mahomes against who many consider being the greatest player to ever play the game, Tom Brady and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
This game is projected to shatter almost every sports gambling record there is for a single-game event, with the take being well into the hundred million area. With an event as big as this, many wealthy people will be placing bets on the side they believe is going to take home the Vince Lombardi Trophy. This means massive sums of money are going to be riding on a single outcome of one game. The sportsbooks share their large bets, but of course, don’t disclose the identity of the person who placed them. In this section, we’ll cover some of these huge bets and talk a bit about how they might cover and the risk involved.
One thing people should understand before they see these bets is that these are probably not being placed by the “sharp” bettors you hear about. The amount of money that is wagered here usually comes from extremely wealthy casino VIPs who are just looking for some money to burn. So before you go out and say “wow, this guy put that much down, he must know something I don’t! I gotta get in on this,” please consider that it probably wasn’t a professional gambler and more likely a guy with lots of money to throw around.
Chiefs Take Early Money
The first large bets to be shared came in on January 26, when three huge bets came in on Kansas City at BetMGM:
The notable #SuperBowlLV wagers are starting to roll in.
Here are some big bets over at @BetMGM:
* $180,000 on Chiefs ML -180
* $115,000 on Chiefs -3.5 (-115)
* $110,000 on Chiefs -3.5 (-110) pic.twitter.com/huoWmgbRRV— BetQL (@betqlapp) January 26, 2021
Clearly, some people were confident in Mahomes to win back-to-back Super Bowls. Or perhaps it was the same guy who placed all three of these wagers? Either way, the stake here is massive. While the Chiefs are the favorites, as they should be as defending champs, you can never underestimate Tom Brady. To invest almost $500,000 against Brady in a big game is usually death, so this guy better be waving Chiefs flags and praying to the high heavens that Brady doesn’t have one of his vintage performances.
A Large Wager Was Placed Right Here In Illinois
The party kicked off with a bang here in Illinois when a bettor placed a massive wager on the Chiefs at -3 (-120) to win $100,000.
FYI: @WilliamHillUS has already seen a #MajorWager on #SuperBowl, in Illinois: $120K on Chiefs -3 (-120), win $100K.

You may think that all the large bets are on the Chiefs after these last few, but I promise you, the last one is worth more than the rest combined. A bettor here in the great state of Illinois also fancied betting against Brady and placed a massive $120,000 wager on Chiefs -3. While the Chief’s offense is certainly explosive, their lack of a running game against this very stout Bucs defense could prove costly. They will have to rely heavily on Mahomes once again. Last year against San Francisco in Super Bowl LIV, Damien Williams went off for over 100 yards and 2 TDs, and a lot of people thought he should have been named Super Bowl MVP after Mahomes threw 2 INTs. It’s not as sure of a lock as you might think, and somebody has realized this.
$2.3 Million Wager Placed On Bucs
According to Darren Rovell, a bettor in Las Vegas placed a $2.3 million wager on the Tampa Bay Bucs +3.5. This guy is someone who is clearly invested in the “never bet against Tom Brady” crowd.
A bettor in Nevada logged onto his @betmgm app last night and placed the following bet:
$2,300,000 on the Bucs +3.5.
Would net $2M if Tampa Bay covers in Super Bowl LV.

This guy was certainly just a casino VIP that had way too much money. That’s a ridiculous amount of cash to be wagering on one game. Could you imagine logging onto an app on your phone and just casually placing over $2 million on a team? It’s something most of us will probably never experience, but for this guy, he probably was relieved to get some of that excess money out of his pocket for a while.
