Last Sunday night was one of the most embarrassing nights in recent memory if you are a Chicago Bears fan. The dreaded Green Bay Packers were able to establish the run early with Akiem Hicks out of the game, which led to Aaron Rodgers carving up the Bears defense like he was on the 2018 Dolphins. A 41-25 blowout loss that really wasn’t as close as the score indicates resulted from a poorly coached team that hasn’t won off its bye week in 7 years and dropped the club to 5-6 on the season.
Now, the Bears get Matthew Stafford and the pitiful Detroit Lions at Soldier Field in what is a must-win for the Bears if they hope to make the playoffs this season and quell the bleeding of a 5-game losing streak. DraftKings is offering you a remarkable deal right now on their website where when you sign-up, you can get up to a $1,000 bonus. Detroit Lions (4-7) at Chicago Bears (5-6)
Spread
CHI -3, DET +3
This game will be off a lot of radars this weekend because it features two teams that really know how to stink it up. The Bears are favored by three at home against the Lions, probably because they are at home in Chicago. As previously mentioned, the Bears got eviscerated last Sunday night on national television by their “rivals” the Packers. I use the term rivals loosely because the Packers have absolutely owned the Bears since Aaron Rodgers has taken over for the franchise and has really made this rivalry an annual whipping the Packers put on Chicago. Mitch Trubisky threw two horrendous interceptions, and the defense gave up in an embarrassing loss.
The Lions may have it even worse. They just fired their head coach Matt Patricia after compiling a 13-29-1 record over two-and-a-half seasons with the team. They also fired their General Manager Bob Quinn, who has failed to put a winning roster together for years. Sound awfully familiar to have another Quinn be fired this season. Detroit got whomped by the Houston Texans on Thanksgiving day, and that is what put the final nail in the coffin for the Patricia/Quinn combo.
This game will be all about injury information. If the most likely scenario plays out: Kenny Golladay and De’Andre Swift both inactive and Akiem Hicks active, I will lay the three with the Bears. The Lions defense is giving up yards and points in bunches, and even though Trubisky turned the ball over, he still looked better than Nick Foles and could move the ball. We’ve seen this Lions offense without Golladay and Swift, and it wasn’t pretty in a shutout loss to the Carolina Panthers. Ugh.
Total
44.5
This is a meager total that would skyrocket if Lion’s key players were actually playing. Without them, though, I don’t see how anyone could bet the total in this one and it not be the under. While the Bears may score a bit, they are still the Bears, so I can’t predict a blowout. Any team that will deploy Adrian Peterson for double-digit carries a game in 2020 is a surefire bet not to score very much.
Player Props
With the Lions’ secondary ravaged by injuries to Jeff Okudah and Tracy Walker, they will be ripe for the picking for Trubisky and the Bears offense. We say it every time he takes the field, but Trubisky’s report with Allen Robinson is something that needs to be taken into account every single time the two-step on the field together. I fully expect him to go off at any number on Sunday when Trubisky stares him down on every other play.
For the Lions, you really don’t have many options to go to. Luckily for them, the Bears’ one position seems to have trouble defending is actually healthy for them. Tight End T.J. Hockenson should have a very productive day, not just because he’s the only healthy and reliable receiving outlet, but because the Bears get unraveled by TEs down the middle of the field. Look for Hockenson to keep the trend going after Big Bob Tonyon ripped the Bears last week for the Packers.
