The biggest star in UFC history is back in the headlines again as prepares for another impending comeback. In a St. Patrick’s Day week interview on his MMA channel “The Mac Life”, Conor McGregor sat down to talk about his future.
Of course, McGregor has not fought since he horrifically broke his leg in a loss to Dustin Poirier in July at UFC 264.
Since then, a lot of speculation has surrounded when he will return and who he will return against. Of course every time McGregor speaks, it makes headlines. This time in his latest sit down interview, he spoke about what he is eyeing at the moment, and it’s BIG.
When talking about what he’s looking at for the future, the former double champion said, “myself versus Usman for the 170-pound title in my comeback fight is the one I’m eyeballing at the minute.”
McGregor is the former featherweight (145 pounds) and lightweight (155 pounds) UFC champion. He has fought once at welterweight (170 pounds) against Donald Cerrone in January, 2020. A fight that UFC President Dana White himself admitted was essentially a lightweight fight without a weight cut.
McGregor explained why he wants to focus on welterweight for now, saying ,”why cut the weight? I’ve already won the 155-pound title. I got myself to a lightweight frame, but you know, I’m big now. I feel big. I feel strong. I feel healthy. I’ve got good energy. I’m coming back from a gruesome injury. I don’t want to be depleting myself. There should be no need to deplete myself.”
Lately during his rehab, McGregor has been looking absolutely HUGE. His Instagram posts make it evident that he’s definitely been focused on adding muscle.
I mean just look at this…
McGregor said he is eyeing late summer right now, but it is a loose commitment and he wants to come back whenever he is “the best that I possibly can be.”
AUTHOR’S TAKE:
Let me put this as clearly as I can; Conor McGregor DOES NOT WANT THIS FIGHT. I cannot think of a worse fight for McGregor to take, especially in his comeback. Kamaru Usman is currently the best pound-for-pound fighter in all of MMA. While McGregor has always been about taking the biggest risks and gambles, the way that Usman would handle him would be terrible for McGregor’s career. Usman is HUGE. He couldn’t make 155 if he tried. McGregor can. That’s the difference here. The size difference in this fight is one that would be hard to ignore. Additionally, you’d have to wonder how McGregor’s power would transfer against larger fighters. It’s hard to say that he would still have the same knockout power that he has at 145 or 155 at 170 against bigger guys.
Overall, McGregor should stay FAR away from this fight and focus more on getting a few wins back under the belt before trying to go after the best fighter in the world right now.
