It seems Notre Dame has struggled with recruiting five star talents over the years in comparison to the Clemson’s and Alabama’s of the college football world.
But today, Notre Dame incoming freshmen Michael Mayer has been upgraded from four stars to five.
BREAKING: 247Sports names #NotreDame tight end signee Michael Mayer a 5-Star Recruit.
What made him such an elite talent in our eyes?
Here’s what @bartonsimmons @SWiltfong247 @BrandonHuffman @CharlesPower and @GregBiggins had to say.

He’s A Playmaker
We saw it a few weeks back when he took the field with some of his peers.
Big Play Ability from Michael Mayer.#IrishBoundXX

The guy can play. He has a knack for making plays and that is exactly what the Irish need to round out the offense in 2020.
Before he was granted the highly coveted fifth star, he was already the highest rated tight end recruit to commit to Notre Dame according to 247 Sports’s Notre Dame All Time Football Recruits (since 2000)
Mayer joins elite company to play TE at Notre Dame, a position that has produced eight NFL draft picks over the past fifteen years.
He succeeds Cole Kmet, who is likely to be the ninth tight end to be drafted over this span.
Plug & Play
When Notre Dame lost Kmet to the NFL at the conclusion of this season, Irish nation remained confident that we had a serviceable TE-by-committee.
Mayer should fit seamlessly into and perhaps lead this committee which is expected to include returning production from Brock Wright, Tommy Tremble and George Takacs.
At five stars, I have to imagine that Mayer has the ability to line up any where on the field and make his presence felt.
