Anthony Rendon is set to get a huge payday once free agency opens this winter. Rendon is the 2nd best FA available next to Gerrit Cole, and the best position player available.
I’ve seen a lot of White Sox fans just brush off the idea of the team making a push for him simply because he primarily plays Yoan Moncada’s position of 3rd base. These fans scoff at the idea of moving Moncada back to 2nd because we have Nick Madrigal waiting in the wings. However, I believe there is a way to bring in Rendon without completely shifting the infield.
Anthony Rendon Could Be The White Sox New First Baseman
Rendon definitely has the power and on-base skills that profile at first base. Defensively I don’t think he’d suffer that much as he is already an above-average defender at 3rd. The White Sox infield could be as follows: Yoan Moncada- 3B, Tim Anderson- SS, Nick Madrigal- 2B, Anthony Rendon- 1B. When the White Sox resign Jose Abreu to a new deal, he could take over DH duties. Signing Anthony Rendon would also give the team some much-needed depth. If Moncada gets hurt, he could fill in at 3rd while Abreu would move to 1st.
Make no mistake, Anthony Rendon will cost a large chunk of change. Jerry Reinsdorf needs to prove he is willing to spend on A-list players like Rendon before fans can truly get excited. However, if the Sox do somehow lure Rendon to the South Side, there would still be a fit for everyone on the current roster.
