White Sox Top Prospect’s Struggles Are Raising Serious Concerns

-

The Charlotte Knights have been the talk of the town, as many of the White Sox top hitting prospects have been off to a hot start in AAA. The Knights as a team are also off to a fantastic start, as they started 4-0 but are now 4-1 after being handed their first loss Wednesday night.

At second base, they have one of the main pieces in the Garrett Crochet trade, White Sox 8th ranked prospect Chase Miedroth. The Knights are also stacked at catcher, as they have the White Sox second ranked prospect, Kyle Teel, and their sixth ranked prospect Edgar Quero. Tim Elko is also on the roster and he has continued to hit, as all he has done since joining the White Sox organization is hit.

The Knights lineup also features White Sox 4th ranked prospect, Colson Montgomery. Montgomery started his 2025 season off with a bang, as he hit a homerun in his second at-bat, but it has been downhill since then.

In 20 at-bats, Montgomery still has just one hit, that being the homerun that came in his second at-bat. While that is slightly concerning, what is even more concerning is the number of strikeouts he has to this point. In those 20 at-bats, 15 have ended in strikeouts. That is a staggering 75% strikeout rate. If that wasn’t bad enough, he still hasn’t taken a walk.

While it only has been five games, it may be time to sound the alarm, as his rough start to the season comes after a very underwhelming Spring Training. While Montgomery missed time with an injury in the middle of Spring Training, he went 1 for 9 when he did play, striking out five times.

There is a chance that Montgomery is still fighting through the injury he suffered in Spring Training, as he has had lingering back problems throughout his career. However, the fact that this performance comes on the heels of a down season in 2024 where he hit just .214 with 164 strikeouts in 485 at-bats doesn’t help Montgomery’s case.

Montgomery has a ton of talent and it stinks to see him start off the season like this. Perhaps an off day or two could get him right, as it would let him mentally reset and heal up if his back injury, which can linger, is still bothering him. However, with his track record, there is clearly something wrong, so the White Sox need to figure it out sooner rather than later.

Once Montgomery gets back on track, look for promotion to Chicago, as he has been close to a debut for a while now, as now he just needs to force Chris Getz’s hand to promote him.

The regression is no fluke… I said this was failed pick from the start.
