For some reason, it seemed like most of the top prospects in the White Sox system took a page out of the White Sox book and missed a significant chunk of the season to start. But, the White Sox got good news yesterday, as it was announced that top prospect Colson Montgomery would be making his debut for the White Sox Arizona affiliate.
Top Prospect Back In Action
Many people wondered where Colson Montgomery had been, as news of his injury had not been widely reported. But, after a month had gone by and he had not logged an at-bat in Birmingham, it was finally clarified what was going on.
It was announced that he was sidelined with a back injury that kept him out to this point. Oblique strains can be difficult to manage, as they continually pop up if they are not healed properly. Take Yoan Moncada for example, as he can never seem to shake his back injury, so hopefully this is not a reoccurring thing for Montgomery.
It is good to finally see him in action, as many of the other Sox minor leagues have not been making much noise. When your top few prospects are all out, it makes an already depleted farm system seem even worse.
The former first-round pick has played very well in his minor league career so far, as he is a .277 hitter with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs in just 123 games. He is ranked as the 26th-best prospect in all of baseball according to MLB. He is by far the highest-ranked prospect and is a very valuable asset to the Sox.
Look for him to take a big step this year once he gets to Birmingham and for him to potentially compete for a role on the major league team next year if all goes well.
He’s Back
According to sources, Mongtomgery had a good day back.
He would line out in that at-bat, but would finish with a triple on the day. This is an encouraging sign, as he doesn’t look like he has missed a beat. I would imagine he plays for about a week in Arizona, then they will move him to either A+ or AA, where he finished out last year.
With all the uncertainty following Tim Anderson this year, it is important that Montgomery develops so he can take over SS if the White Sox decide to move on from Tim Anderson. If he can become a good player in the major leagues, he could be one of the main focuses of the rebuild/retool of the White Sox.
It will be interesting to follow him the rest of the season, and hopefully, he can pick off where he left off last year and have another great year.
They need to move on from Tim Anderson, period.
