The White Sox added another outfielder on Thursday amid a series of roster moves. Josh Palacios agreed to a minor-league deal with the club after being recently designated for assignment by the Pirates, per FanSided’s Robert Murray. Palacios elected free agency after being outrighted by the Pirates.
Palacios elected free agency after being outrighted by Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old has struggled to find a long-term home in the majors, playing for three teams over the past four years. He debuted with the Blue Jays in 2021 before appearing in 29 games with the Nationals the following season. Over the last two years, he played 114 games with the Pirates.
While his .230/.286/.346 slash line across 433 MLB plate appearances doesn’t stand out, Palacios has been productive in the minors. Last season, he slashed .291/.372/.489 with the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis. Over nearly 800 minor league at-bats from 2021-24, he has posted a .303 average and a 131 wRC+.
Palacios appears to be settling into a “Quadruple-A” role—dominating Triple-A but struggling to translate that success to the big leagues. Now out of minor league options, his path to the White Sox roster is uncertain, especially with the team’s current outfield depth. However, if Luis Robert Jr. or Andrew Benintendi becomes a trade piece at the deadline, Palacios could see a call-up later in the season.
More rearranging of deck chairs on the Titanic with the signing of another unknown, totally non-impact player. With the Sox about to lose another in-division game to the Tigers and fall to 2-5, there is absolutely nothing to cheer about on the southside. And I have absolutely no trust in the organization to either identify good talent or develop it. New manager, same old results. The only saving grace is that we play in the weakest division in all of baseball by a lot. The distance between the Dodgers and other contenders and the Sox is like the distance between… Read more »
