We are now a few weeks into Spring Training for the White Sox, officially transitioning to the 2025 season. It will signal the end of the dreadful 2024 season, allowing the players who still remain on the roster to purge the historically bad season from their minds.
The Opening Day roster will look very different than it did last year, and as the year progresses, some of the White Sox top prospects will join the roster as they earn promotions to Chicago. There are many variables to how a player will perform in a given season, but certain baseball reference websites try to give their best evaluation on how a player will perform for the upcoming season.
Each year, FanGraphs releases their Steamer projections on how they believe each player will perform in the upcoming year. We will be taking a look at each player’s 2025 projections as we approach Spring Training.
Next, we take a look at Martin Perez, the newest addition to the White Sox starting rotation.
Unlike most of the other arms on the White Sox, Perez has racked up plenty of MLB innings, as he has been in the major leagues for just about 13 years. Last year with the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres, Perez had a 4.53 ERA over 135 innings.
Now, FanGraphs projects him to have a very similar stat line, as they project him to have a 4.56 ERA over 136 innings. That would be a solid output for Perez, as the Pirates were able to trade him at the deadline, something the White Sox will likely try and do this season.
In that trade the Pirates got an 18 year old prospect that could be a decent player, but is more of a lottery ticket for them. The White Sox can potentially get more than that, as in Perez’s contract there is a team option for next season, giving the team who trades for him more control, potentially leading to a better return.
He looked good in his Spring Training debut, as he threw two scoreless innings.
Martín Pérez (@MartinPerez54d) struck out two and allowed only one hit over 2.0 IP in his 2025 Spring Training debut.

Perez will eat some innings for the White Sox and the better he plays, the better the return will be for the White Sox, hopefully getting a player that can help them win some games in the future.
