White Sox Make Their Decision On Josh Harrison’s Future

-

Tim Anderson will be returning to the White Sox next season. The same cannot be said for his double-play partner for much of the season, Josh Harrison.

The White Sox announced on Monday that they were picking up Tim Anderson’s $12.5 million club option for 2023. Meanwhile, they declined Harrison’s $5.5 million club option. Harrison will get a $1.5 million buyout as a result.

Anderson’s club option getting picked up comes as no surprise.
He has been an intricate part of the White Sox offense for the past several seasons. The two-time All-Star has batted above .300 in his last three seasons, which included an American League batting title in 2019.

He was limited to 79 games because of a strained groin and a tear in his middle finger. His power numbers were also down, but he still managed to hit .301 and get his second All-Star nod.

A case could have been made to bring Harrison back next season. He could have been a valuable piece coming off the bench next season.

After a brutal start to the season, he rebounded nicely to hit .256/.317/.370 with seven home runs in 119 games. He has the versatility to play three infield positions and adds an element of speed. His teammates also praised him for his positive impact on the clubhouse. At age 35, he probably isn’t a viable option for the White Sox at second base if they hope to contend. However, having him as a utility man would have been an excellent option off the bench for new manager Pedro Grifol.

Unfortunately for Harrison, the White Sox already have money committed to Leury Garcia, so another utility player isn’t necessary. The White Sox also have Romy Gonzalez, Lenyn Sosa, and Danny Mendick as options to play second base, assuming the team doesn’t seek an upgrade this offseason.

AJ Pollock is the last White Sox player with an option decision remaining. He will likely opt into that $13 million player option.

Committing money to Leury was a huge mistake. I’d rather have Harrison coming off the bench than him any day. But agree with Larry, this team needs to make a commitment to landing a quality 2nd baseman one way to another. Like right field, 2nd base has been a weak spot for us for way too long. But why would Turner want to come here vs staying put in LA? He’s a natural SS and we already have our guy. Why should he be forced to play 2nd just to be on the Sox? The Sox are not a “destination”… Read more »
