White Sox Fan Refuses Hand Over “Sell The Team” Banner To Security

-

The White Sox may have gotten swept in the Crosstown Cup but there was no shortage of action at Guaranteed Rate Field last week.

On Thursday the White Sox rallied after falling behind 7-0 to cut the deficit to one. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the White Sox managed to get the tying run in scoring position before the comeback attempt fell short. The 7-6 loss to the Cubs turned out to be the appetizer for Saturday night’s contest which featured more drama in the stands than on the diamond.

This included two fans rushing the field, with one of them needing a medical cart to carry them off after they injured themselves, a massive brawl on the concourse between White Sox and Cubs fans, and a banner being waved in the upper deck that read “sell the team” before security came over to try and take it.

At this point, signs encouraging Jerry Reinsdorf to sell the team are nothing new at Guaranteed Rate Field. Unfortunately, neither is security confiscating the signs before the television camera can see them.

A group of White Sox fans got the banner into Guaranteed Rate Field without any issue, which is unsurprising since a fan was allegedly able to sneak a gun past security last season.  According to a social media post from the fan who goes by Dos Can Sox on X, after hanging the banner at the 500 level security tried to take it. A short clip posted on social media shows a security guard trying to pry the sign away but the fan refuses to let go. Security eventually stopped trying to take away the sign as the game ended which allowed the fans to pose victoriously with the banner on the stadium ramp.

The fan expressed frustration on social media after the game that security was worked up over a sign but a brawl on the 100-level was allowed to get out of hand with nobody from the stadium jumping in to stop it. The fan added that security stopped trying to take the sign away once the game ended.

It is hard to blame fans for being frustrated. The White Sox haven’t won a playoff series since 2005. Currently, Reinsdorf’s baseball team is 28-91, with a legitimate shot of losing 100 games before they get to 30 wins. The season has included a pair of 14-plus-game-losing streaks and the manager getting fired.
