White Sox Eye Kim Ng As Next President of Baseball Operations

-

A new candidate to fill the Chicago White Sox President of Baseball Operations has fallen right into Jerry Reisdorf’s lap. According to a report from Ken Rosenthal in The Athletic,  there are some rumblings in the industry that the White Sox are interested in having former Miami Marlins General Manager Kim Ng “overseeing newly promoted General Manager Chris Getz.”

On Tuesday Kim Ng declined the mutual option in the last year of her contract with the Marlins organization. The decision came after Marlins brass informed Ng that they wanted to hire a President of Baseball Operations over her.

Ng spent three years as the Marlins GM. In her first year, the Marlins won 67 games, followed by a 69-win season before finally breaking through and winning 84 games and capturing a spot in the Wild Card Round. Part of that was thanks in part to the addition of Jake Burger at the trade deadline, a move which Ng was instrumental in organizing. The Marlins ranked 26th, 28th, and 23rd in payroll during those three seasons.

She is more than qualified to be the White Sox next President of Baseball Operations and has ties to the organization. Ng has 21 years of experience in MLB front offices and has won three World Series rings.  She served as the White Sox assistant director of baseball operations from 1990-96.

She then spent time with the New York Yankees from 1998-2001 then ten seasons as a top assistant for the Dodgers from 2002-2011 before being named the highest-ranking female executive in baseball operations and the first female GM in the four major North American professional sports, when the Marlins hired her in 2020.

Ng won three World Series rings while spending 21 years in the front offices of the Chicago White Sox (1990-96), New York Yankees (1998-2001) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2002-11). Before joining the Marlins, she was an MLB senior vice president for nine years.

While Chicago certainly hasn’t been a banner organization over the past several years, Ng brings with her knowledge from being inside some of the best-run franchises in baseball after spending over a decade in New York and Los Angeles. She also managed to build a winning team with an extremely limited budget.

While Jerry Reinsdorf is not known for his spending habits, the White Sox did rank seventh in payroll in 2022. He is more willing to spend money than Ng’s former boss Bruce Sherman.

Part of the White Sox many issues last season stemmed from former President of Baseball Operations Kenny Williams. According to multiple reports, communication between Williams and former GM Rick Hahn was lacking. Often times the two would not be on the same page with Williams going over Hahn’s head at times to make moves. This included the decision to trade Jake Burger to the Marlins for pitching prospect Jake Eder. Having a stable presence overseeing Getz would be an extremely valuable asset to have.

Ng will be highly sought after so the White Sox will have to act sooner rather than later if they want to land her expertise.
