The Chicago White Sox were expected to make a handful of moves prior to their series against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, but they ended up making 11 total roster moves.
The two big names back are shortstop Tim Anderson and utility man Hanser Alberto. However, the White Sox are also calling up outfielder Billy Hamilton, veteran right-handed reliever Alex Colomé and left-handed relief pitcher Sammy Peratla.
To make room on the roster, the White Sox have demoted rookies Lenyn Sosa and Oscar Colas. Meanwhile, Romy Gonzalez has been placed on the 10-day injured list. On the pitching side, left-handed reliever Jake Diekman and Frank German have been designated for assignment. Joe Kelly is also on paternity leave, which means he could miss up to three games.
Jake Diekman
The Jake Diekman trade turned out to be as bad as White Sox fans thought it would be the minute it was announced last summer. It was the only move Rick Hahn made at the trade deadline and the left-handed pitcher did nothing to make new fans in Chicago.
In 2022, Diekman made 26 appearances with the White Sox and posted a 6.52 ERA in 19.1 innings. This year, Diekman made 13 appearances and had a 7.94 ERA in 11.1 innings. The lefty allowed at least one earned run in 15 of his 39 relief outings with the White Sox.
Rookies Demoted
The big demotion for the White Sox is outfielder Oscar Colas. The 24-year-old played in 25 games and had a slash line of .211/.265/.276, with one home run, seven RBI and eight runs scored. Like many rookies before him, Colas struggled with plate discipline, recording 20 strikeouts to only five walks in 84 plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Lenyn Sosa didn’t do much after getting called up after the White Sox lost a few of their infielders. Sosa, 23, played in 16 games in April and slashed .151/.167/.245, with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. He struck out 12 times and walked once.
Billy Hamilton?
So, uhhh, Billy Hamilton hasn’t exactly been doing well in Triple-A this season at Charlotte.
The veteran outfielder seems to be a good clubhouse guy, so that’s good, but right now this move really leaves you scratching your head. There’s no way Hamilton is going to step in as a starter, so does that mean Eloy Jimenez is going to be in right field, splitting time with Adam Haseley?
And hey, credit to Haseley, who is 6-for-11, in seven games this season, but I don’t think anyone was expecting the White Sox to be counting on him in the month of May.
New Pitchers in Bullpen
White Sox fans know about Alex Colomé. Even when he was saving games for the White Sox, it looked shaky, but shaky is somehow better than whatever the White Sox bullpen as a whole has been this year. Anyway, after a few rough years with the Minnesota Twins and Colorado Rockies, Colomé was let go by the Washington Nationals back in March. Expectations shouldn’t be high here.
As for left-hander Sammy Peralta, the 24-year-old was picked in the 18th round of the 2019 draft by the White Sox. So far at Triple-A this year, Peralta had a 3.52 ERA in 15.1 innings, striking out 15 and walking three in eight appearances. The lefty pitched two or more innings in five of his eight outings with Charlotte.
