White Sox Continue To Shuffle Their Roster With Another Interesting DFA

-

At this point, even as early as it is, it is no secret that the White Sox have the worst offense in the major leagues. They are roughly 20 runs behind the 29th ranked team in runs scored and they are matching 100 year old records for most shutouts this early in the season. The offense is historically bad and Chris Getz keeps scrambling to get some sort of boost with the bats.

In his latest move, Chris Getz is calling up Danny Mendick, an old friend. Mendick has been on an absolute tear in AAA, as he has hit home runs in five straight games and has hit eight total to this point in the season. That would be the most on the White Sox by far and just three less than the whole White Sox team combined. Hopefully Mendick can add a little juice to the lineup that desperately needs it.

Since Danny Mendick was a non-roster invitee to Spring Training and did not make the team out of camp, he accepted an assignment to AAA, but that move left him off the 40-man roster. This means that the White Sox have to clear room on both the 26-man roster and the 40-man roster to promote Mendick to the big league club.

According to Daryl Van Schouwen, the White Sox will be optioning Lenyn Sosa to AAA to clear room on the 26-man roster, while Zach Remillard will be DFA’d to make room on the 40-man roster.

For Remillard, this will be his 2nd DFA within the last year, as he was DFA’d over the offseason. Nobody claimed him off waivers then, so he was assigned to AAA. Now, it is unlikely that he is claimed this time around, but he does have some traits that a team with injuries to the infield could use for the time being. With that being said, I still expect him to clear waivers and make his way back to Charlotte.

Remillard ended up playing in just two games, going one for five with three strikeouts. He didn’t play poorly, he just didn’t play much in the 10 days since he was called up. In this case, he ended up being the odd man out in favor of Danny Mendick who is on an absolute tear right now.

This move is a bit interesting considering the fact they wasted an option sending Oscar Colas down after one game last week for Remillard, then they only played him in two games and now is DFA’d shortly after. I understand the move to DFA Remillard now, but to call up in the first place was puzzling considering it wasted an option for Oscar Colas.

Hopefully Danny Mendick can make an impact at the MLB level and Remillard finds his way back to AAA, as he is a useful utility man to have around in case of injuries.
