White Sox Call Up Rookie Pitcher, Place Veteran On IL

-

The White Sox had to make a roster move before Sunday’s series finale against the Royals, as rookie pitcher Dane Dunning was scheduled to get called up and make the start on the south side.

It turned out to be a somewhat surprising move, as veteran left-hander Gio González was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Aug. 27, because of a groin strain.

González last pitched on Aug. 22, when he came in relief of Reynaldo Lopez and pitched 3.2 shutout innings against the Cubs. The lefty has made six total appearances, including four starts for the White Sox, as he was filling in for Lopez and Carlos Rodon when they each got injured.

For Dunning, Sunday will be his second start in the majors following his debut against the Tigers on Aug. 19, at Guaranteed Rate Field. The right-handed pitching prospect allowed three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings, ultimately getting a no-decision in a 5-3 White Sox win.

Dunning struck out seven and walked one, throwing 73 pitches in his MLB debut.

Entering Sunday’s play, the White Sox sit one game behind Cleveland for first place in the division. On Monday, they’ll begin a three-game series on the road against the Twins, who are currently 1.5 games behind first place after losing four straight games.
