White Sox Add Top Prospect To MLB Taxi Squad

-

White Sox fans could actually have something positive to look forward to before the season ends. Baseball reporter Francys Romero has reported that the team added top catching prospect Edgar Quero to the MLB taxi squad. He could be activated before the team’s next game on Tuesday.

Quero’s Top Prospect Status And Strong 2024 Season

Quero is a 21-year-old switch-hitting catcher and one of the best prospects in the White Sox organization. Per MLB.com, he is the team’s #4 prospect and the #59 prospect in MLB. His power and arm strength are his best tools, each receiving a 50 grade per their scouting report.

Most White Sox hitting prospects have struggled offensively in 2024. Quero is one of the exceptions. He has had a very strong season with the bat. In 97 games between AA and AAA this year, he is batting .281 with 16 doubles, 16 home runs, a .368 on-base percentage, and .835 OPS. He has improved even more since his promotion from AA to AAA, hitting .300 with an .868 OPS in 25 games with the Charlotte Knights. Quero has improved his prospect stock significantly this season and looks to be the White Sox future long-term starting catcher.

Interesting Timing

The timing of this move is interesting given that the season is almost over. Even if Quero were to play every game the rest of the way, he would not get that many MLB at-bats. However, getting him a cup of coffee in the big leagues now could make sense. There is no pressure whatsoever, and his performance this season justifies a taste of the majors. Quero likely would have been called up sooner than this had he not dealt with a back injury that sidelined him for roughly a month. Despite his injury setbacks, he seemingly will make his MLB debut soon.

Quero Is White Sox Catcher Of The Future

Given the White Sox catching situation, Quero figures to get a substantial amount of playing time once he is activated from the taxi squad. Chuckie Robinson is a 29-year-old career minor leaguer who has served as a placeholder since his call-up in late July. Quero will undoubtedly receive priority over him. Korey Lee is also a factor in the situation. The 26-year-old has served as the team’s starting catcher for most of the season and could have a future on the team in some capacity, but likely will be a backup long-term. Quero is younger and has more upside than Lee, so giving Quero the most playing time moving forward makes more sense. It is time to see what he can do.

Name To Watch

There are very few players currently on the White Sox roster who one can envision still being on the team when they are good again. Edgar Quero is one of those players. His potential with the bat at a key position like catcher makes him an intriguing player to watch moving forward. The White Sox will need their young players to step up next year to get this team headed in the eighth direction again. Quero will be at the forefront of those efforts.
