Despite not owning a majority stake in the White Sox, Jerry Reinsdorf will remain the club’s decision-maker. The Ishbia brothers are now listed as co-owners alongside the 89-year-old, with a new purchase date recorded in 2025.
New details released by 670 The Score host Matt Spiegel, about the White Sox ownership shares are currently split up, show that Justin and Mat Ishbia own 35% of the team, the highest of any ownership partner.
Fund controlled by Michael and Jonathan Reinsdorf accounts for 30%, while Jerry Reinsdorf has a 20% stake, and roughly eight other limited partners own the remaining 15 %.
The Ishbia brothers, who currently own the Phoenix Suns and Mercury, made headlines when Justin increased his minority stake in the White Sox.
Initial reports from Jon Greenberg of The Athletic indicated that billionaire brothers Justin and Mat Ishbia ended their pursuit of purchasing the Minnesota Twins from the Pohlad family after Reinsdorf approached them, presumably about a potential path to taking control of the White Sox.
In February, Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen and Eben Novy-Williams revealed that the Ishbia’s had initially acquired a small share of the White Sox in 2021. Now, with their withdrawal from the Twins’ sale process, Justin Ishbia appears to be shifting his focus toward a greater role within the White Sox organization.
However, according to Jon Green of The Athletic, the White Sox are structured in a way that Reinsdorf is the controlling partner even without holding a majority stake. Reinsdorf has been vocal about his love for the game of baseball and doesn’t seem to want to leave the game anytime soon.
As long as Reinsdorf remains the team’s chairman, he controls the final decision-making, even without a majority stake.
His love of the game, my ass. The only game Reinswine loves is the game of making money. And I have to believe like father, like sons. The only hope is the Ishbia’s. From what I know of these guys, they aren’t going to pony up 35% and let some imbeciles squander away their investment. They’re aggressive investors and in it to ultimately gain control. We can only hope.
Nothing will change with this team, as long as the Reinsdorfs are involved.
