After an encouraging 2-2 start, the wheels have fallen off quickly for the White Sox. The team is now on a five-game losing streak, capped off by another bullpen meltdown yesterday afternoon. They have also been outscored 32-13 over that span. Even with their historically bad 2024 season in the rearview mirror, the lack of talent on the roster is still evident. Thankfully, reinforcements are coming soon that should spark the team and make them more fun to watch.
Mike Tauchman
The first reinforcement has already arrived in the form of Mike Tauchman. The veteran outfielder signed with the White Sox as a free agent in the offseason and was expected to be a key part of the lineup before a hamstring injury delayed the start of his season. He is now back however, as the team reinstated him from the 10-day injured list and designated veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski for assignment in a corresponding move yesterday afternoon.
Tauchman made his White Sox debut yesterday and immediately proved what the team envisioned when they signed him. He saw 27 pitches in four plate appearances and reached base twice. The Palatine native adds a much-needed MLB-caliber hitter to the White Sox lineup. He works counts, gets on base, provides professional at-bats, can play all three outfield positions, and is a significant upgrade over Jankowski.
Chase Meidroth
Chase Meidroth was a hot name in spring training as one of the players the White Sox got back in the Garrett Crochet trade. While he didn’t make the Opening Day roster, starting the season at AAA has not stopped his positive momentum. Meidroth is off to a scorching hot start, hitting a robust .333 while flashing power, hitting three home runs and a double in seven games. He has also walked seven times compared to just four strikeouts in 32 plate appearances. All told, Meidroth has an impressive 1.250 OPS entering the day.
Jacob Amaya has been the White Sox primary shortstop until now, but his flaws with the bat are crystal clear. He has just two hits all season. His seat is getting warmer by the day, as Meidroth is younger and has considerably more upside. Service time could be a factor in this case, but even if the White Sox want to gain another year of team control over Meidroth, that will be achievable shortly. Swapping out Amaya for Meidroth on the White Sox roster is logical.
Josh Rojas
Josh Rojas was one of the White Sox more notable free agent signings this past offseason. He is similar to Tauchman in that he is a left-handed hitter who provides quality at-bats. Rojas is also a versatile player, able to play both the infield and outfield. He fractured his big toe in spring training, and his timetable to return is unknown. However, given their somewhat redundant skill sets, he will likely replace Nick Maton on the roster when he is ready to return. Going from Maton to Rojas is another upgrade on paper and should strengthen the lineup.
Kyle Teel/Edgar Quero
Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero are the catchers of the future on the South Side and both are off to strong starts in AAA. Teel has an OPS over .800 entering the day, while Quero’s OPS is a sparkling 1.017. They are both knocking at the door of the big leagues and will need at-bats at the highest level to continue their development.
Like Meidroth, service time is a likely factor in how soon the team will call up their young catcher duo. The deadline for the team to get another season of control is soon approaching, so both could be headed to Chicago sooner rather than later. Matt Thaiss and Korey Lee are the team’s current catching tandem, but Teel and Quero will take priority whenever they get the call. There are several paths the White Sox could take with Thaiss and Lee. They could trade one or both, keep one as the third catcher on the roster, or even attempt to sneak them down to AAA for depth.
The Bullpen
The White Sox bullpen has been a mess so far. They have already had two implosions and likely more are on the way. The team doesn’t have that much reliever talent right now, but the AAA level has some options if they want to swap out bodies in hopes of finding a successful formula. Adisyn Coffey, Steven Wilson, Eric Adler, Trey McGough, and Peyton Pallette are just some relievers in the minor leagues who could get their chance in Chicago soon.
White Sox Roster Shuffling Will Be Common Theme This Season
2025 will likely be a season full of roster moves and instability for the White Sox. The big league roster lacks talent and defined roles at nearly every position. As a result, players will be shuttled in and out as the team looks for contributors. It is very early, but we are reaching the point where the first wave of reinforcements could be coming.
Reinforcements. Bwahahahahahaha!!!!!
