Early Draft Targets For The White Sox

-

With the draft coming up in just two weeks, it is an important time for teams to restock their farm systems and hopefully get players that can change the direction of their franchise. The White Sox will look to do the same, as recently they have not been able to consistently produce homegrown talent from the draft.

The White Sox will have the 15th pick in the draft after a disappointing season last year. The White Sox have a lot of needs, but they should pick up a catcher and add some young arms into the system, as you can always use a pitcher. Regardless, they need talent in their system, and they should pick the best player available, as you can always find a spot for them.

The White Sox have gone high schooler in back-to-back drafts for their first pick, as they wanted to even out the farm system. Now, they should look to take whoever is the best player, as they need as much talent in the system as they can get.

Chase Davis

The one player I have seen mocked to the White Sox the most has been Chase Davis, the outfielder from Arizona. According to MLB, he is the 39th-ranked prospect, but many other outlets have him higher, going in the middle of the first round.

Davis is a power-hitting outfielder that has hit 18 and 21 home runs in back-to-back years for the Wildcats. He has supplemented that with a high average as well, as he has .319 in his college career, but .362 this past season, which shows his improvement.

While the outfield is not necessarily an area of need for the Sox, you need to take the best player available, and Davis’ bat may be too good for the White Sox to pass up.

Blake Mitchell

Mitchell is a catcher out of a high school in Sinton, Texas, and could be just what the Sox could use in their organization. They have very little depth at the catcher position and this would be a significant upgrade. He would take a few years to develop, but he could become their catcher of the future.

Since he is a high school prospect, the Sox would need to use up a good portion of their pool money to sign him in the first round, but that is what they have been doing the last couple of years. Mitchell might be worth it, as anytime you can find a long-term option at Catcher, you take it.

His high school stats are absolutely insane and according to FOX Sports, he can get up to 97MPH on the mound. He has a cannon for an arm and that is a valuable asset for a major league catcher. If the White Sox go prep bat, he could be an option.

Hurston Waldrep

Waldrep is one of the top college arms not named Paul Skenes. He features a fastball in the mid to upper 90s and could make it to the pros sooner rather than later. This could be appealing for the White Sox, as they will have a few open slots in their rotation.

The White Sox have also had some luck with top college arms, as they were able to make Chris Sale and Carlos Rodon into very good pitchers very shortly after they were drafted. Carson Fulmer is the outlier in this situation, but besides him, they have had a lot of success, and could with Waldrep as well.

Waldrep has a great three-pitch mix and would have a nice floor as the middle of the rotation arm, with the upside to be an ace. If you can get him in the right hands, he could potentially be the steal of the draft. He may not fall to 15, but if he does, you have to pull the trigger.

The White Sox will have some choices to make and lets hope they can make the right one and develop them into a good major leaguer. Now, it remains to be seen if they can do that, but if they player is talented enough, they can overcome that.
