Colson Montgomery Scratched from White Sox Lineup as Precaution

-

White Sox shortstop Colson Montgomery was scratched from the lineup Wednesday as a precaution due to back spasms. The team has listed him as day-to-day.

CHSN’s Chuck Garfein reports that Montgomery has zero concerns about the injury. However, he added that he felt something during one of his swings in practice and wanted to err on the side of caution. While he remains unconcerned, it’s worth noting that a previous back injury was cited by The Athletic’s Keith Law as a factor in his regression in the minor leagues. The White Sox fourth-ranked prospect slashed .214/.329/.381 with 18 homers and 63 RBIs in 130 games with the Charlotte Knights last season.

In Montgomery’s absence, infielder Tristan Gray was inserted into the lineup. The 22-year-old Montgomery, one of the White Sox’s top prospects, is expected to play a key role this season, making his health a priority as the team progresses through Cactus League play.

Montgomery, who is battling to become the team’s Opening Day shortstop, has had an impressive camp so far, homering in his first Cactus League game against the Cubs on February 22. So far that has been his only hit in seven at-bats this Spring.

The White Sox have not provided further details on Montgomery’s condition, but his status will be monitored closely in the coming days.
