Colson Montgomery Gets An Insane Prospect Ranking

-

There has not been much to look forward to as a White Sox fan, but some of the newest prospect rankings should have White Sox fans pleased, as there are some Sox prospects high up on the list. But, the most shocking and the best ranking overall is the newest ESPN prospect rankings list.

On the new list, ESPN puts Montgomery as the number 2 prospect in all of baseball, just behind the first overall pick from last year, Jackson Holliday.

This is a great ranking and it is about time that the national media has caught up with the Sox prospects, as Colson Montgomery has a chance to be an absolute star in this league.

Here was the explanation for the ranking:

McDaniel’s explanation hits it right on the head. While it may be aggressive, he has all of the tools to succeed in the MLB. The best part was the comparison to Holliday, as he seems as about as close to a can’t-miss prospect as you can get right now.

This would be the highest prospect ranked in a long time for the Sox, all the way back to when Yoan Moncada was ranked as the number-one prospect in all of baseball. Now, just because he is ranked highly doesn’t mean he is going to automatically be a star, but he sure has the stats to back it up.

Numbers Don’t Lie

On the season, Montgomery is hitting .315 with five home runs and 24 RBIs. He has an insane 1.027 OPS to go with that.

Since getting promoted to AA Birmingham, Montgomery is hitting only .219 in 10 games, but he has an amazing .468 on-base percentage. AA is the toughest level, so it will take a few weeks for him to settle in.

The most important part is that he doesn’t look like he is overmatched. While the average is not where he wants it to be, he is still getting on base at an insane rate, which can easily translate to the major leagues.

More importantly, he was recovering from an injury that cost him most of the season, so he is working his way back from that.

Montgomery has all of the tools in the world. People have compared him to Corey Seager, and if that pans out, that would be insane for the White Sox. If he can get to the major leagues soon, he could make a great duo with Luis Robert in the middle of the lineup for years to come and lead the Sox to their next playoff berth.
