As the offseason begins for the Chicago White Sox, they have money to spend and holes to fill and right field is a major hole for them and should be a priority for general manager Rick Hahn.
The only right fielder currently on the White Sox roster is Nomar Mazara who slugged .228/.295/.294/.589 and hit only one home run with 15 runs batted in with 42 games played. So, Mazara ended up playing the majority of the 60-game season, which was not ideal.
There’s a couple of options on the market for the White Sox, but these are the best of the best and players that could potentially help the White Sox reach the World Series in 2021.
George Springer
George Springer would be a huge addition for the White Sox and could ultimately be the piece they need to reach the World Series and win it. He spent the last seven years in Houston and now is finally a free agent.
It may be an expensive move, but it’ll be worth it. Springer slashed .265/.359/.540/.899 with 14 home runs, 32 runs batted in, with 51 games played in 2020. Oh, and Springer has actually proven he can still hit even without cheating, just saying.
Springer playing in right field and Luis Robert playing center field. Wow, that’d be an amazing sight to see for White Sox’ fans.
MLB trade rumors actually predicted that the Chicago White Sox will sign Springer to a 5-year, $125 million dollar contract.
Marcell Ozuna
Marcell Ozuna would be another option for the White Sox if they don’t end up going after Springer.
Ozuna slashed .338/.431/.636/1.067 while leading the National League in home runs (18) and leading the National League in runs batted in (56) in 2020. An outstanding season for Ozuna in his only year with the Atlanta Braves.
Even if they sign him for just one season, it’ll be worth it. Maybe offer him a 1-year, $20 million contract and see if he accepts it.
MLB recently talked about 8 potential suitors for Ozuna and they have the White Sox at number two.
“Chicago was aggressive last winter, signing yasmani Grandal, dallas kuechel, and edwin encarnacion while handing jose abreu a new contract. the result was the club’s first trip to the postseason since 2008, but now the white sox will look to take the next step after their wild card loss to the athletics. nomar mazara and encarnacion were both disappointments, paving way for gm rick hahn to import another big bat”
and yes, Ozuna would be another big bat, so Hahn, please do White Sox fans’ a favor a sign Ozuna.
Joc Pederson
Joc Pederson may not be the “ideal” piece for the White Sox, but he’s the cheap option, which isn’t a bad thing necessarily.
He did slash .190/.285/.397/.681 with seven home runs, and 16 runs batted in, with 43 games played in 2020. Oh, and he did just win the world series with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Personally a huge Pederson fan, but I don’t know how other White Sox fans feel about him. He’s certainly better than Mazara and currently better than what they have right now. Even if he doesn’t play right field the entire year, he’d be a solid bench bat against righties.
Adam Eaton
Remember Adam Eaton was apart of the White Sox in 2016 before being apart of the Lucas Giolito trade? Yeah, the White Sox traded him to the Washington Nationals for Giolito, Dane Dunning, and Reynaldo Lopez.
Now he’s finally a free agent. In his first year with the Nationals in 2017, Eaton ended up tearing his ACL after only playing in 23 games.
In 2020, Eaton slashed .226/.285/.384/.669 with four home runs, and 17 runs batted in while playing in 41 games for the Nationals.
Although he is 31-years old and not in his “prime” anymore, he’d be a very cheap option for the White Sox if they were to go that route.
Yasiel Puig
Yasiel Puig did not play in Major League Baseball in 2020. After looking at his previous season, I wouldn’t mind if the White Sox took a chance on him.
Ok, so out of those names, who would you like to see the White Sox sign during the off-season? or is there a name I didn’t mention that you’d like to see them sign?
