Because the Chicago Cubs have such a long, storied history in the game of baseball, they have had plenty of time to build a large fanbase. The organization has been around in one way or another since 1876, always in and around the Chicago area. They have won the third most MLB games and are among only two teams to score more than 10,000 runs.
Most Cubs fans chose their path because of the ease of access to their games or a loved one before them. How many of us had parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, or close friends to help steer the path of our fandoms? How many of us were either with those loved ones or wished we were with them during Game 7 of the 2016 World Series? This is what makes being a fan so special and meaningful.
Often, our fandoms overtake some of our time and attention in our personal lives. It’s perfectly natural to incorporate fandom into the most significant moments in our lives. These could be birthdays, graduations, or even weddings.
A video circulating the internet shows a father and his daughter sharing a special moment during the daughter’s big day. Naturally, it sent the web into a hating, jealous tizzy, and it’s worth talking about.
Cubs Fans Opt For A Game Of Catch Over Dancing
In the above video, an apparent father and daughter are preparing for the father-daughter dance during a wedding. As the song and dancing begin, the father turns around and starts talking to the DJ. He changes the song to “Go, Cubs, Go!”. The two then put on Chicago Cubs jerseys, are given baseball gloves, and play a game of catch.
Because the Cubs have many haters and the internet refuses to leave nice things alone, this video received some unwarranted ill-will. Words like “embarrassing” and “cringe” were thrown around mercilessly.
On Tuesday, a video labeled as a Craig Counsell “diss” track was released to the internet. In it, a Brewers fan is clearly trolling a rival team for underperforming while his team was excelling without their former coach. It was fair game for him to make, and it was also fair game for Cubs fans (or anyone else) to get riled up about. The video was obviously made to be a troll.
Set aside the incorporation of the Cubs specifically. This was just a father and daughter bonding over something they both love on a special day. The game of baseball (and the Chicago Cubs) had a significant influence on their lives and relationships together. That’s something every sports fan can relate to, no matter what team or sport it is.
That all being said, everyone is different and expresses their thoughts and feelings differently. Everyone also has the right to their own opinions and how they wish to express them. So, if you are using the internet to hate on these Cubs fans for having fun on their special day made and planned for them, I guess go for it.
Cool article Tommy. This made me remember why I love my cubs! With all this loosing I’ve been down pretty hard.
