Third Team Interviews Cubs Coach for Manager Position

-

The Chicago Cubs already need to replace a few coaches this offseason and it’s possible that another opening may occur on David Ross’ staff. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Cubs bench coach Andy Green has interviewed with the Cleveland Guardians for their vacant manager position.

Terry Francona, who was Cleveland’s manager since the 2013 season, retired following the end of the 2023 season.

Green, 46, played professionally from 2004-09, beginning his MLB career with the Arizona Diamondbacks before he spent a year playing in Japan and then played one final season with the New York Mets. Following his playing days, Green began managing in the minor leagues and in 2015 he was promoted to be the Diamondbacks third base coach.

After just one season coaching in the big leagues, the San Diego Padres hired Green as their manager to begin the 2016 season. It was a rough time for Green in San Diego, as the Padres were rebuilding for the majority of his time there. Green was eventually fired on Sept. 21, 2019, ending his tenure with a 274-366 record.

After the Cubs hired Ross to replace Joe Maddon as the team’s manager following the 2019 season, Green was hired to be the bench coach, the position he’s held with the Cubs ever since.

Earlier this offseason we learned that the Cubs parted ways with two coaches, bullpen coach Chris Young and game strategy coach Craig Driver.

Besides the Guardians, the New York Mets, Los Angels Angels, Houston Astros, along with the Padres and possibly the Milwaukee Brewers (if Craig Counsell doesn’t return) are all searching for a new manager this offseason. Speaking of Counsell, the Brewers gave the Mets permission to interview him.

There was also a report from Locked on Cubs earlier in October that Green had interviewed with the Angels.

We haven’t really heard much about that since nor has that report been confirmed, but if true Green is now up to three interviews for an open manager position.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the Mets have interviewed Green for their vacant spot in the dugout.

To go along with Green, the Mets have also interviewed New York Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza.

The Mets may be waiting on Counsell’s decision, as they have previously interviewed him in October. Counsell is also in the mix with the Guardians, but there’s also the chance that he returns to the Brewers in 2024.

You should probably expect some announcements coming within the week prior to the start of the general manager meetings that take place from Nov. 7-9.
