The weather was less than favorable on Saturday night when the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds were due to square off. Rain poured down all day, so officials had no choice but to delay the game. Some stayed in the stadium, others explored the neighborhood, but many questioned if the game would even happen. Because the Cubs and Reds are in the same division, the Reds would be back later in the year to make up for a potential rainout if needed.
However, the game was scheduled to be nationally televised as the FS1 Game of the Week. You cannot just call off a national game that easily. Thus, shortly after 9:35 pm local time, the first pitch was thrown, and the game was underway. Officially, it was the third-latest start to a Wrigley Field game since 2003.
An early Seiya Suzuki error gave up four runs early to the Reds. However, Suzuki turned right around with a grand slam that brought the Cubs right back into it. An eventful game ended with the Cubs winning, 7-5, shortly after midnight.
Against all odds, the game was played and completed. The teams even returned for a 1:20 start on Sunday, just 13 or so hours after leaving the field that morning. But they were not the only ones punished, so to speak, for the game actually being played.
Cincinnati Reporter Is A Man Of His Word After Cubs And Reds Play
Jeremy Rauch, a sports reporter for Fox 19 in Cincinnati, was on the scene on Saturday to report on the Reds and Cubs game. He was one of those who did not believe the game was going to happen on Saturday night due to all the surrounding circumstances. Rauch was so confident the game wasn’t going to happen that he said he would wrap himself in Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil for his next TV hit. Well, the game happened. So did his time to shine.
We’ve all known the ad placement for Reynolds Wrap on the Cubs’ field tarp was perfect. It’s nice to see it pay off in a fun way. Good on Mr. Rauch for being a man of his word and making it happen. The suit doesn’t even look that uncomfortable. They even gave him a nice little crown to go with it.
The Cubs will play the Reds again this weekend for a four-game set in Cincinnati. Hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative there than it was in Chicago this past weekend.
