There has been a lot of discussion among Cubs fans regarding the broadcast style on Marquee Sports Network and some fans absolutely hate play-by-play man Jon “Boog” Sciambi because he hasn’t quite given that hometown feel. Some of his calls have certainly been underwhelming and if you saw the short clip of Miguel Amaya’s home run on Wednesday, then you would’ve guessed that Sciambi was working for the San Francisco Giants.
Here’s the home run call the Cubs posted.
Yeah, that definitely didn’t sound all that enthusiastic, but that’s because right before the pitch was delivered, Sciambi started to give condolences to MLB reporter Tim Kurkjian and his family after the passing of Kurkjian’s brother.
The Cubs announcer eventually acknowledged how awkward it was, comparing the call to the now infamous Nick Castellanos home run that happened back in 2020, when Cincinnati Reds play-by-play man Thom Brennaman was in the middle of an apology after a hot mic caught him saying a slur. That became an internet meme almost immediately and since then Castellanos has interrupted other serious moments with home runs on several occasions.
That highlight the Cubs posted was intentionally cut because the home run call started with, “Tim Kurkjian lost his brother Matt…” Sciambi eventually sent his condolences as Amaya rounded the bases.
MLB.com has also edited the home run call on their site.
However, here’s the live, unedited version.

He seems to care none about that, and is too busy attempting to extol the virtues of his dry humor, which usually rubs me the wrong way almost 99% of the time, and he basically changed how Len Kasper was an announcer for the Cubs I believe he came from Florida, he had potential, he was a good announcer but I think he get poisoned by JD.… Read more »
