Dansby Swanson Unanimously Named Best Defensive Shortstop

-

Some call this the real gold glove awards, some might say these are the nerd awards, regardless, Chicago Cubs shortstop not only won the Fielding Bible gold glove for all shortstops, he won the award unanimously.

Unlike the Rawlings Gold Glove awards, Fielding Bible only names one winner for every position rather than a winner from each league.

Via Fielding Bible.

Dansby Swanson won his 1st Fielding Bible Award. He was the only unanimous selection among 2023 winners. Swanson led all shortstops with 18 Defensive Runs Saved. He was +14 Plays Saved on balls hit to his right, the most of any player at the position. Balls hit to that area (the shortstop-third base hole) have been a weakness for Swanson in past seasons but in 2022 and 2023, he’s improved considerably.

The only other Cubs player to win a Fielding Bible award at shortstop was Javier Báez back in 2020.

Swanson, who signed a seven-year, $177 million contract last offseason with the Cubs, finished the 2023 season with a 4.9 fWAR, a 20.3 defensive rating on FanGraphs, along with a career high 20 defensive runs saved and 20 outs above average, which matched his 2022 total with the Atlanta Braves. Swanson won last year’s gold glove, the first of his career.

Swanson, along with Nico Hoerner and Ian Happ, are also finalists for 2023 Gold Glove awards at their respective positions.

Here are all the winners of the Fielding Bible awards for the 2023 season.
