Folks, as a disclaimer for this time of the year and really it’s for any time we discuss rumors, take it with a grain of salt. We’re here to have fun, come up with crazy hypotheticals and you know, be fans. So, we have our first Cubs rumor coming out of the GM Meetings in San Antonio, Texas, where 22-year-old outfield prospect Owen Caissie is already creating trade buzz.
I mean, what does that actually mean? Could be nothing, could be something, could be Jon Morosi relaying a specific name for a specific reason.
Owen Caissie is a popular name in early-stage trade buzz at the GM Meetings.

The 22-year-old Cubs prospect is coming off an impressive Triple-A season (.848 OPS) but does not have a clear path to everyday at-bats in a crowded @MLB outfield. @MLBNetwork
Let’s try to guess why this info is public at this time. I’ll take it from a Cubs perspective and if we do that, then I think that means the team is out there looking to make a huge splash in a trade. While at this point the path to every-day playing time in 2025 isn’t clear, Caissie could easily find at-bats and plenty of them in 2026. There is no rush to trade Caissie this offseason…unless the Cubs are targeting an impact player this winter via trade.
I have to point out that every offseason Morosi seems to have more tidbits about the Toronto Blue Bays compared to your other national insiders. So, could this be something Morosi is hearing from Toronto? If that’s the case, then there’s one player the Cubs should obviously be looking at if the Blue Jays are sniffing around Caissie.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who made his MLB debut back in 2019, will only be 26-years-old by the time the 2025 season begins and as he enters his final year of arbitration all eyes are on the Blue Jays and whether or not they get an extension done with their star. Guerrero Jr. has expressed interest in staying with Toronto, but at the end of the day the team is going to have to pay up and time is ticking.
Also, as you probably know, Caissie is Canadian, so what better destination for him if he is traded than the one MLB team in Canada.
I could also see the Cubs dangling Caissie in trade talks with the Seattle Mariners for pitching, Houston Astros for Kyle Tucker or maybe even the White Sox for Garrett Crochet? I must emphasize once again though, all these mentions even the Blue Jays, are pure speculation by me.
We’ll see if this Caissie rumor goes anywhere in the next couple months. The Winter Meetings take place in Dallas from Dec. 9-12.
Do NOT trade Cassie. Trade Seiya and PLAY Cassie. I’d even trade Bellinger. They need to buid from youth up for a chance at a championship. If he trades cassie I say FIRE HOYER NOW!
