Cubs, Please Get Rid of Eric Hosmer

-

I’ve been a dick, maybe an asshole online to Eric Hosmer ever since the Chicago Cubs signed him this past offseason. But hey, he started the year with the team and I’ve cheered him on when he’s come through. But we can all see it, he’s not good and there’s no promise of him getting any better and now he’s making mistakes that are more directly costing the team.

It might only be April, but a win in the first month of the season matters as much as one at the end, especially if you’re the Cubs and you are supposedly trying to win in 2023. You cannot win with guys like Eric Hosmer on your roster. For starters, he’s not a good hitter and the team isn’t even trusting him to start at first base the majority of the time. You can add dumbass base running to the list now, too.

The Cubs lost another annoying game to the Miami Marlins on Saturday, their second one-run loss of the weekend. Caleb Kilian was called up to make a spot start, filling in for Jameson Taillon, and the rookie pitcher was bad, allowing six earned runs in 3.1 innings. Five of those runs came in the very first inning. However, even after going down 7-2, the Cubs battled back, starting their comeback effort with a Cody Bellinger home run to lead off the sixth inning.

Three consecutive singles followed to load the bases with nobody out. Edwin Ríos pinch hit, but struck out looking and then Nico Hoerner drove a ball to the warning track in left field.

The Cubs were set up to have two guys on with two outs and Dansby Swanson up at the plate trailing 7-4. One problem, Hosmer tagged up from second, but then stopped between second and third base. He was thrown out, retreating back to the bag and the scoring threat abruptly ended for the Cubs.

There are always players on every team, well every team that is trying to compete, that can get away with these types of mistakes. Eric Hosmer cannot.

The San Diego Padres could not wait to get rid of Hosmer last year, shipping him off to the Boston Red Sox, willing to pay the rest of his contract just so that he wouldn’t be on their team anymore. Then, after a few months in Boston to end the regular season, the Red Sox dumped Hosmer in the middle of December.

I still do not know what the Cubs love so much about Hosmer and what truly is frustrating is that they have a guy waiting at Triple-A, who sure, could turn out to be bad, but at least Matt Mervis has the potential to be good and guess what, Mervis can certainly be better than Hosmer because the bar is that low.

So, I’m asking nicely this time, please Cubs, get rid of Eric Hosmer.

What are we doing here, Jed? You already let go of Luis Torrens, is Hosmer really cracking everyone up in the clubhouse that it’s worth it to see him hit more 60mph ground balls for outs? Move on already.
