The Cubs had a somewhat busy trade deadline compared to most of the teams in the NL Central, as they added four players in four separate deals. The team is also getting back a few of their own players from the injured list, while another starting pitcher is once again sidelined with an injury.
First, the trades.
The Cubs acquired right-handed hitters José Martínez and Cameron Maybin, while adding left-handed relievers Andrew Chafin and Josh Osich.
On Sunday, the Cubs DFA’d two players in outfielder Ian Miller and utility man Hernán Pérez to make room on the 40-man roster.
Cubs GM Jed Hoyer spoke to the media on Sunday and also revealed that Tyler Chatwood would be going on the injured list with an elbow issue. The team is hopeful that it’s not a season-ending injury.
We also found out that Albert Almora Jr. is headed to South Bend.
Those moves were made official on Monday as well as the activations of Kris Bryant and Steven Souza Jr. from the injured list.
And the odd-man out in the bullpen is Casey Sadler, who was DFA’d.
Meanwhile, Chafin is on the 40-man roster, but he’s still on the injured list with a finger issue.
Chafin won’t be back for a couple weeks.
So, to recap:
- Bryant, Souza, Maybin, Martínez, Osich added to the 28-man roster
- Chatwood and Chafin on the injured list
- Almora optioned to South Bend
- Miller, Pérez and Sadler DFA’d
