CINCINNATI — Before the start of the weekend series between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark, Cubs’ manager Joe Maddon told reporters that rookie phenom Adbert Alzolay will get at least one more start for the Cubs.
The plan is for Alzolay to start on Monday in Pittsburgh, with Tyler Chatwood headed back to the bullpen.
It’s not clear what the Cubs’ plans are after that. The All Star Break is coming up in a couple of weeks and the Cubs can get all the help they can get in relief during this stretch of games without any days off.
Perhaps the Cubs may call up guys like Dillon Maples, Rowan Wick, or others to help in relief as they shuffle things around.
It was clear that Alzolay wasn’t done yet when the Cubs opted to option Tony Barnette for Craig Kimbrel earlier this week. Turns out he impressed them enough against Atlanta to warrant another start.
Good for Alzolay. Let’s hope he can keep up the great start to his major league career.
