Criminal Charges Stemming from Fan Who Fell 21-Feet During Cubs vs. Pirates Game

-

This story took another tragic turn and honestly it’s not all that surprising. Unfortunate, but maybe a lesson for other fans. At the same time, this is horrible luck right? Who expects to see their bud fall 20 feet after a couple beers?

Three weeks ago a fan fell 21 feet from the right field stands onto the warning track at PNC Park in the seventh inning of a game between the Cubs and Pirates. The victim, Kavan Markwood, was taken to the hospital with several injuries to his neck and back. According to a recent report, Markwood’s friend, Ethan Kirkwood, now faces criminal charges following the incident for giving the 20-year-old alcohol.

Kirkwood, 21, has been charged two counts of selling or furnishing alcohol to a minor, court records show.

Ethan Kirkwood, 21, of McKeesport, Pennsylvania, now faces criminal charges for allegedly providing the alcohol, Pennsylvania State Police said Tuesday.

Police reviewed receipts and video footage from PNC Park that showed Kirkwood purchased two 24-ounce cans of Miller Lite shortly before 7 p.m. at the April 20 game, according to the complaint.

He is then seen on the video walking away from the bar area with Markwood and two women, with both men holding a can, according to the complaint.

After Markwood fell from the bleachers, Kirkwood “is then seen handing a can to a female who throws it in the trash and jumping over a railing and then jumped on the field to help his friend,” the complaint states.

Markwood’s girlfriend confirmed in interviews with police that Markwood did indeed drink two beers inside the stadium. Kirkwood admitted to buying the alcohol.

It’s a mess of a situation, but it says a lot about Kirkwood that he did jump down and was by his friend’s side on the field after the accidental fall.

A preliminary hearing in the case has been scheduled for June 23.
