The Chicago Cubs traded Christopher Morel at the trade deadline this season. In return for third baseman Isaac Paredes, the Cubs sent Morel to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays played this weekend without Morel with the team. He was excused to finish something he started a long time ago.
Things have not improved much for Morel on the field since leaving the Cubs. In 33 games, he’s hitting .187 with three home runs and five runs batted in. Two of his three home runs came during his first two days with the Rays. On the flip, Paredes has given the Cubs almost identical numbers. He’s played in 36 games batting .177 with three home runs and seventeen runs batted in.
Morel was a fan favorite during his time with the Cubs. He was signed with the team as an amateur free agent in 2015 and made his way through the minor league system, making his MLB debut in 2022. Since he was brought up in Chicago, he embraced and appreciated his opportunity to play baseball for one of the league’s most historic franchises. He often had fun with players, Wrigley Field staff, and fans in the stands.
Some fans were unhappy when the Cubs traded Morel. But like players from our past, he’ll return someday to a rousing ovation. If he stays with the Rays, that return could come next season.

Christopher Morel spent his weekend away from the team. The Rays gave him permission to go home to the Dominican Republic to take care of a personal matter. Although Morel had to do something for himself, it was mostly for his mom.
Christopher Morel Excused From Team To Graduate High School
Over the weekend, Christopher Morel left the Tampa Bay Rays to fly home to the Dominican Republic to surprise his mom. Beyond that, he also graduated high school. He has pursued his education while playing baseball and earned the right to graduate.
Morel is his family’s oldest child, but he is also the last to graduate high school. He wanted to complete high school and receive his diploma for his mom as a surprise.
Math was Morel’s hardest subject. He said dealing with the numbers was the hardest part. But the mission was accomplished; Morel is now a high school graduate.
Morel returned to the Rays on Sunday to play against the Orioles in Baltimore. He went 1-4 to bring his on-base streak to eight games. However, it was snapped on Monday night in Philadelphia against the Phillies.
