MJ Reportedly Canceled Comeback Press Conference Because He Was Down Gambling

-

You probably weren’t expecting to be reading about Michael Jordan news today in 2021, and I wasn’t expecting to be writing about it either. Alas, here we are, and MJ is back in the headlines making news once again. We all know that Jordan is one of the greatest basketball players of all time, maybe one of the greatest athletes ever as well. What you maybe didn’t know, is that the greatest competitor ever was also a big time gambling man.

There has been plenty of stories told over these many years about MJ’s betting prowess, but they never have really made big news. If you watched the recent MJ documentary “The Last Dance,” which you almost certainly did, you heard a little bit about Jordan’s wagering and how much of an impact it had on the superstars life.

Longest Game Of Spades Ever Played

Last week, former NBA player Antoine Walker dropped a bombshell of a story about another legendary gambling moment in Jordan’s past. During an appearance on the “All Things Covered” podcast, Walker went into detail about a time when Jordan and himself apparently played a game of spades as a team against two other men for an incredible 36 hours straight. That has to be some sort of record right? The buy-in for the game was $20,000, with the bets getting as high as $50,000. Walker then commented how he recalled that at one point in the game, Jordan and himself were down a massive $900,000. That’s right, almost $1M down in some games of spades.

“Mj sent for half a million, cash.” said walker. “He canceled the press Conference and everything. we played for 36 straight hours.”

That wasn’t enough for Michael apparently. He was so caught up in the game and trying to get back into it that he canceled his scheduled press conference that day in which he was to state that he was returning to the NBA.

The Ultimate Competitor

This was certainly a wild story to hear, but honestly not all that surprising. Michael Jordan is the ultimate competitor, on and off the court. Everything that he does seems to become the stuff of legend. I mean, we all knew Jordan was a competitor, but I had no idea that this man was willing to go this far just to prove he was a winner. It makes me feel like he would go all out with literally any game or challenge presented to him. “Hey MJ, I’ll bet you can’t eat five extra large pizza’s in a single day.”
