Throughout the beginning of this summer, the Blackhawks have been at the center of more than a few free agency rumors. Though the market doesn’t open until July 1, Chicago’s abundance of cap space and desire to make a move have placed them firmly in the conversation when insiders have mulled over rumors and tidbits of information.
But those conversations have been just that – rumors. That is, until Wednesday, when a few more trustworthy sources confirmed the Blackhawks’ activity to insider Pierre LeBrun.
“Chicago GM Kyle Davidson continues to make his calls around the league, and it’s clear from what we’re hearing from other front offices that he’s looking around for a top-six forward and perhaps a middle-six forward, too.”
– Pierre LeBrun
If Davidson is “fishing in deeper waters,” the news finally gives some substance to the rumors we’ve been discussing all summer. Although the Blackhawks’ forward group isn’t exactly the most star-studded of the bunch, having a top-six forward on the wish list also means Davidson is looking for a star to help Connor Bedard. Whether it be through a trade or free agency, Chicago could make headlines sooner rather than later.
Either way, every indication thus far has been that the Blackhawks could be connected to Carolina in adding skaters. The Hurricanes won’t be able to keep everyone from last season’s squad, and names like Jake Guentzel have been listed as potentially available. LeBrun confirmed that another star in Carolina has caught Chicago’s eye.
“The Carolina Hurricanes have heard from nearly every team in the league on forward Martin Necas and, from the sound of it, have narrowed the market to five to seven potential matches… The Winnipeg Jets, Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens, Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins are among the teams that have shown general interest.”
– Pierre LeBrun
We’ve discussed Necas here plenty as a potential option to bolster the top of the Blackhawks’ lineup, and it appears Davidson shares the same sentiment. Necas is a perfect fit in Chicago’s roster and rebuild timeline – he’s only 25 years old, boasts immense all-around talent and scored 53 points last season.
With the Blackhawks targeting a few of the top players on the market, this summer should be a thrilling one for Chicago hockey fans. The team is looking to improve sooner than many once expected, which is a hugely promising sign of what’s to come.
