Roenick was suspended indefinitely without pay by NBC Sports after he made concerning comments about co-workers Anson Carter, Kathryn Tappen, and Patrick Sharp back in December.
Blackhawks legend Jeremy Roenick will not return to NBC Sports following his suspension for making inappropriate comments about his fellow broadcasters while appearing as a guest on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast. Roenick publicly announced the end of his tenure on Wednesday afternoon with a video on Twitter that was captioned “What A Joke!!”.
“I’m very disappointed and angry today I will not be returning to NBC,” the 50-year-old Roenick said in the video. “I’m also grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to share my love, my passion and my knowledge of the game with millions of people, millions of fans.”
Roenick also stated that he hopes to be back at work as soon as possible and will be “better and more motivated to bring you the best entertainment and the best that I have for the game of hockey.”
Back on Dec. 19, Barstool Sports’ hockey podcast, Spittin’ Chiclets, released their latest episode, which featured Roenick. While on the podcast, Roenick talked about a vacation he took to Portugal with both his wife and Tappen and joked about having a threesome with them. He also repeatedly brought up Tappen’s appearance. Roenick then went on to make a couple of remarks about Sharp, calling him “so beautiful” that “I’d have to think about it if he asked me… I wouldn’t say no right away,”.
Now, this might seem minor, but then again, Roenick needs to be smarter in these kinds of situations. It’s 2020, and he has to know talk like this won’t sit well with his employer.
Nonetheless, firing Roenick seems a bit extreme for the comments he made. The guy already publicly apologized and was suspended indefinitely without pay. What more could he do?
