With the Blackhawks’ front lines expected to be completely revamped when free agency rolls around on July 1, the next few weeks are expected to be a complete frenzy. GM Kyle Davidson and his staff will likely hold meetings with dozens of players and multiple teams in an effort to propel their team back into contention as they aim to come out of their rebuild.
One name that could be among the biggest to sign with the team is center J.T. Compher. The talented 28-year-old recently completed his deal with the Avalanche out west, and appears to be headed for free agency.
According to Jay Zawaski with CHGO Sports, Compher and the Blackhawks have “mutual interest” in signing.
There obviously won’t be any official news, as Chicago doesn’t want to be charged with tampering. However, the team’s management sees Compher as a valuable addition to their roster thanks to his skillset and versatility. He’s able to slot in wherever the team needs him most, and is able to play both the center and wing positions.
History
After being drafted 35th overall in 2013 by the Sabres, Compher signed his three-year entry-level contract with the Avalanche in 2016. He was called up during the 2016-17 season and never looked back, tallying at least 18 points in each campaign. Compher signed a four-year, $14 million deal in 2019, which is set to expire this summer.
Possibility of Signing
While Colorado hasn’t yet made an effort to resign Compher, the team reportedly hasn’t ruled out the possibility of the center coming back for at least another year. However, with several teams projected to be bidding for Compher’s services, he may be ready to test the open market.
When it comes to a possible bidding war, the Blackhawks have one edge other teams don’t: home-field advantage. Compher is a native of Northbrook, Illinois, meaning Chicago will likely attempt to “bring him home”.
The key word to the news of the possible deal is “mutual”, as it’s reported that Compher is strongly considering a move home. Whether it be due to location, or the excitement of playing with a rebuilt team led by generational prospect Connor Bedard, Chicago has plenty to offer the forward.
Impact
Compher could come into Chicago and immediately make an impact. With seven years of NHL experience, he can offer guidance to an extremely young roster. However, he’s not old enough to where the wheels are falling off, as he posted a career-high in points last year with 52 points. In addition to his offensive prowess, Compher is defensively responsible, and could help a unit that struggled last year.
When free agency officially opens in the beginning of July, J.T. Compher may be one of the biggest names to watch for Blackhawks fans. Nothing is official yet, but both sides appear more than motivated to try to get a deal done.
In what world is JT Compher a “big name” free agent. This is a pretty weak free agent class and I wouldn’t put him on the top 20. He is a solid third line guy, not a big name.
Would be a nice addition
