For the bulk of the last two weeks, we explored possible best-case scenarios for each projected forward line of the Blackhawks this year. The forwards on the roster are a source of hope for not only Blackhawks fans but for Chicago sports fans in general. Of course, one’s mind immediately goes to Connor Bedard, and for good reason. But there’s tremendous talent throughout the entire group, and there could be a number of lethal scorers this year.
Though the focus this offseason has been on the forwards, the defensive group in Chicago could be truly interesting this season. With a healthy mix of veteran leadership and young talent, each defensive pairing will be something to keep an eye on.
When it comes to a mix of veterans and youth, a prime example is the possible top pairing of Wyatt Kaiser and Seth Jones. We’re still somewhat early into training camp, but this is a defensive line that has emerged as a strong possibility. It’s a bit different than the Korchinski-Jones line I projected back in July, but this pairing has the potential to be a highlight of the Blackhawks’ roster.
Wyatt Kaiser
Kaiser was a bright spot in this year’s Prospect Showcase, serving as the team’s captain before being held out of the second game. After a solid stint with the Blackhawks at the end of last season, Kaiser is being rewarded with the first shot at the top line, though the spot is far from locked up. He’s a bit undersized for a defenseman but boasts exceptional skating ability as a highlight of his game. With that playmaking ability, he could be a tremendous asset to the offensive game of the Blackhawks, as he may draw quite a bit of attention from opposing defenders, which in turn will free up his teammates to find the back of the net.
Playing alongside the stout defensive game of Jones, Kaiser could be freed up to fully display his offensive game without having to play as conservatively as he typically would. He’ll also benefit tremendously from the experience of Jones as he works to flesh out his defensive positioning and puck-stopping. On the top line this year, Kaiser has the chance to develop into something truly special.
Seth Jones
Jones has become somewhat infamous as the worst contract in the NHL, as he’s signed at a $9.5 million AAV through 2030. However, it’s important to note there was a reason he was initially signed to that massive contract. Once a fourth-overall pick, the 28-year-old plays a terrific all-around game. He has a solid shot and couples good mobility with veteran awareness. Additionally, he excels at eating up minutes at a high level, as he was on the ice for more than 24 minutes per game last season while none of his teammates broke the 20-minute mark.
Jones will be asked to lead this young defensive group both in production and in the locker room. He could pair well with Kaiser as another solid offensive option, filling out a defensive line that boasts great speed while handling defensive duties. While his production on this line likely won’t match his salary, his veteran presence and stout defense will be appreciated throughout a year of uncertainties.
A top pairing of Wyatt Kaiser and Seth Jones will be stout on defense, but especially lethal in the scoring column. In the line’s best-case scenario, they could work behind a dangerous top offensive line and supply them with countless chances while converting on some of their own.
