Why Matt Eberflus Won’t Survive Beyond 2023

-

Matt Eberflus has only started the second season of his coaching tenure for the Chicago Bears. One would think he deserves a little more patience to get things pointed in the right direction. Normally, that would be true. It can take time for coaches to start winning games consistently. The problem with the Chicago Bears head coach is he hasn’t won a game since last October. Eberflus has lost 11 straight and is 3-15. That is by far the worst start any Bears head coach has had to their tenure in the Super Bowl era. Even Abe Gibron won four of his first 14 games.

That should give you an idea of how bad the optics are. However, that alone isn’t the reason Eberflus should be nervous. It’s his showings against the Green Bay Packers. There is nothing Bears ownership hates more than losing to them. It is even worse if you get embarrassed by them. If you don’t believe that, check out what happened to Eberflus’ three most recent predecessors.

  • Marc Trestman – 55-14 meltdown in 2014 – Fired at end of the season
  • John Fox – 23-16 loss to Brett Hundley in 2017 – Fired at end of the season
  • Matt Nagy – 45-30 loss after leading 24-14 – Fired at end of the season

Eberflus was hit with the double whammy on Sunday. Not only did he lose by 18 points to the Packers at home, but he did so against a quarterback making his second career start. It was painfully obvious he’d been outcoached.

Every Matt Eberflus showing against Green Bay has looked bad.

That is the most glaring issue about the past three games. Green Bay smoked the Bears 27-10 in the first meeting. In the second, the Bears led 16-3 midway through the second quarter. The Packers ended up winning 28-19. Now you have this latest affair where the Bears offense scored six points in the first half, and his precious defense allowed 21 in the second. Nothing about this team looked like it had improved. He couldn’t use the excuse of lacking talent this time, either. GM Ryan Poles had spent months adding several free agents and draft picks to bolster every position.

Nobody in the NFL needs a win right now more than Matt Eberflus. With each passing week, that losing streak is getting longer. That foul taste of the Packers loss will fester. There are already rumblings of ownership and top team brass not being happy with the performance. Don’t forget Kevin Warren is the team president now. George McCaskey made it clear Poles and Eberflus report to him. That means he has control of their jobs. Warren had no say in their hiring because he hadn’t joined the team yet.

If the losing continues, he may insist to ownership that a reset is needed. Eberflus doesn’t have the luxury of time on his side anymore.

This reporting is accurate. I am already in conversations with management to become the next HC of the CHIB.

Which is why you will see Tyson Bagent sooner than later. Why? It’s going to prove that the quarterback was the difference and not coaching.

Then flu and Getsy will be able to say… see, wasn’t me.

@Sam K that wasn’t said at all. Clearly stated in the article that Poles and Eberflus report to Warren. But yes, I would say Poles is safer than Flus.
