Why Derek Carr Is The Best Option For The Bears

-

Ryan Pace has a problem at the quarterback position.

Mitch Trubisky is coming into his fourth season with the team and he’s yet to show the potential that Pace gushed over when drafting him. This coincides with the fact that the defense is ready to win now. There are multiple factors to the Bears’ mess of a situation.

At the center of it all is the quarterback. Multiple outlets in the Chicago sports media have given their own take on the situation. Most reports are conjecture however many make too much sense.

One of the options that come up is current Raiders quarterback Derek Carr in a possible trade scenario. The Bears had the chance to take the 29-year-old quarterback back in 2014. They passed it up for the opportunity to take corner Kyle Fuller.

The Bears may have that chance. Adam Schefter of ESPN recently reported that the Las Vegas Raiders are going to pursue the services of Tom Brady aggressively. If this is the case, the Bears have a window to right the ship and acquire a franchise quarterback.

If this report is true and the Raiders win the Brady sweepstakes, the Bears must call for Carr. Here is why he’s the best option for the Bears:

He’ll Come Relatively Cheap

Ryan Pace has already made a blockbuster deal with Jon Gruden and the Raiders, what would be one more? That being said, the acquisition of Derek Carr would come at a lower price than many would expect.

The precedent of this trade is made for Alex Smith by the Chiefs back in 2013. This trade only included a 2013 second-round pick as well as a conditional pick in 2014.

The conversation of a trade has certainly gained traction and will continue to. Adding Derek Carr to a Super Bowl ready roster could be the move to put the Bears over the top.

The Fit would be Seamless

Carr’s experience in Gruden’s west coast offense to go along with a huge arm should have Bears fans shouting for this trade to happen. Matt Nagy’s offense is another branch in the tree of coaches who use west coast concepts. In theory, Carr can pick up the offense relatively quickly.

In regards to fit, the other thing to account for is the weapons that Carr would be surrounded with. Allen Robinson is a top-10 receiver in the game. David Montgomery is a promising young running back to go along with the versatility of Tarik Cohen. Not to mention that Anthony Miller has shown real promise when given opportunities.

When healthy Derek Carr led the Raiders to the playoffs. His name was also in the MVP conversation. In 2019, Carr threw for over 4,000 yards and 21 touchdowns to only 8 interceptions. Ability should not be the question. Affordability should.

The Bears are not far away from getting back to the postseason and making a run. It’s up to Pace to pull the trigger and right the ship.
