Last week a surprising rumor surfaced courtesy of analyst EJ Snyder of Bootleg Football. He stated that the Chicago Bears had already spoken to one team about a trade for the 9th overall pick. That team is the Pittsburgh Steelers. It came as a surprise since that organization isn’t prone to moving up so aggressively most years. Still, they have enough question marks at positions like offensive tackle and cornerback to justify such a move if the right player is available. Except things are rarely that obvious.
Peter King of NBC Sports threw a curveball during his latest column. He confirmed the Bears and Steelers were talking about the 9th pick, but it wasn’t for the players people thought. It appears Pittsburgh has eyes for a bigger prize.
“Jalen Carter has two visits to top-10 teams left before Wednesday’s deadline for players to make pre-draft visits to teams. That’s what agent Drew Rosenhaus told me Saturday. I’ll tell you the team that is the most perfect fit for Carter in the NFL: the Pittsburgh Steelers, who’d have to trade up from 17 to get him…
…Best rumor of the week: Steelers trading up from 17 to nine if Carter’s there. There could not be a more perfect coach for Carter than Mike Tomlin.”
What makes this interesting is the rumor running counter to this that Poles would take Carter himself if the Georgia defensive tackle fell to #9. So either that is also true, or it’s a carefully constructed misdirection to help drum up interest in the pick. This latest update hints it is more likely the latter.
The Chicago Bears continue to navigate the market so well.
We already had proof with how Poles secured his package for the #1 overall pick, snaring a top wide receiver, a 1st round pick, and two 2nd round picks in the deal. Almost immediately after that happened, rumors began swirling that the Bears could look to move down again. It was apparent Poles didn’t think highly of the top talent in this class and is instead focused on stockpiling picks. Taking Carter would be a calculated risk. Chicago may do it, but it’s looking more and more like they aim to move down and take an offensive tackle.

Pittsburgh presents them with the perfect opportunity. A move up from #17 to #9 will likely cost a 2nd round pick to achieve. The Steelers have two of them. They can either give the 49th pick straight up, or the Chicago Bears can swap their 53rd pick for the 32nd pick. This would get Poles into that 20-45 range most experts think is the strength of this draft—no shortage of possibilities. There is also a chance another team comes in with an offer, increasing the Bears’ bargaining power.

Correction/Clarity: take Bijan at #9 or #17.
This is NOT a good trade-down if the second round swap is in play. You totally contradictict yourself from a millisecond before in your own article. You play the Poles stockpiling more picks card with the trade-down from #9 to #17. A couple sentences later you write they should merely swap 2nd rounders. Please please enlighten me as to how swapping is stockpiling.
I think that there’s going to be more than the Steelers making Poles and offer
I’m sure the Steelers would love to fleece the beloved Mr. Poles for a second time this year, why not 😂😂
