Few players have stood out more over the course of training camp than Tyrique Stevenson. The Chicago Bears traded up for the cornerback out of Miami in the 2nd round. They loved his size, athleticism, and gritty demeanor. All of those traits have been on display through two preseason games. The one thing lacking to this point has been turnovers. He’s had two golden opportunities at interceptions. Both went through his hands. The game against Buffalo would be his last shot to make an impression.
He didn’t waste it. On 3rd down in the 1st quarter, he made an outstanding coverage play, walling off the wide receiver along the sideline, picking off Kyle Allen, and keeping both feet in bounds.
This is a taste of what Stevenson can be. He’s tough and physical, but that belies how athletic he is. The guy was plastered to the receiver. There was no window to fit that ball in. He made sure of it. The only thing the rookie has to work on is his discipline.
Tyrique Stevenson must work on discipline.
His only problem this preseason has been penalties. There was the unnecessary roughness last week against Indianapolis. Then he had two holding penalties against Buffalo. Admittedly one of them was questionable, but it’s still a reminder that he has to maintain control of himself. That should come with time, experience, and consistent coaching. One thing is clear. It’s already evident the Bears got themselves a talented player.

Poles trading up for him looks more and more like a smart decision every day. This isn’t even accounting for Kyler Gordon, their 2nd round pick from last year. He’s looked even better in training camp. If both of them build on their potential, the Bears secondary could be set for years to come. Tyrique Stevenson deserves all the credit for winning that job. Terell Smith will have to wait his turn down the line.
The Officiating Crew was paying attention some of the time, but they certainly didn’t earn a Paycheck yesterday. Unfortunately, this has been a trend for Years!
Aggressive dudes draw flags on defense. The league is weak and panders hard to the offense. Tyrique brings it every play and that’s awesome. He will get better at not having laundry thrown at him. He needs to focus on his game and experience will take care of the rest.
