Trey Lance emerged almost out of nowhere in the 2021 NFL draft. He was a productive player for one season at North Dakota State, famously not throwing an interception the entire year. That, along with his obvious physical gifts and much-celebrated intelligence, helped him to get drafted 3rd overall, ahead of more proven options like Justin Fields and Mac Jones. Then the San Francisco 49ers sat him for the entire year.
So expectations were high going into his first season as the starter. Conditions weren’t ideal. Soldier Field was drenched by one of the largest rainstorms in recent Chicago memory. The Bears defense made it even worse, harassing him constantly. Lance finished the day with 164 yards passing and an interception. He completed only 46% of his passes. Chicago held him to 10 points and came away with a big win.
A typical quarterback would grumble for 24 hours, shake it off, and get back to work during the week. Apparently, Lance didn’t quite get that memo. A video surfaced of him enjoying the company of some…ahem…ladies of the night.

Trey Lance likely won’t make friends if that’s real.
Quarterbacks are expected to be the leaders of the team. They set the tone on and off the field. Tom Brady wouldn’t be caught raining $100 bills after a loss. He would likely be in the film room obsessing over what went wrong and working like made to fix it. Something like this is a distraction. In fairness, Lance is 22 years old. He is still a kid by NFL standards. Doing things like that are natural, especially after getting his first contract for millions of dollars.
Still, it isn’t likely that fans or the media will look upon such activities favorably. The 49ers have high expectations this season. They were in the NFC championship last year. It is a roster ready to win. That won’t happen if their young quarterback isn’t taking this seriously. Perhaps that is another reason Bears fans should be grateful for Fields. His workaholic mentality would’ve had him sleeping in Halas Hall the entire week.
