VIDEO: Luke Getsy Shows How Detailed He’s Being With Justin Fields

-

There were some concerning indicators watching Justin Fields last season as a rookie. One of the most notable was his erratic fundamentals. Sometimes it would be fine, and others he’d seem too lax, leading to some ugly mistakes. That spoke to problems with not being on top of the details. Part of that is his head likely swimming from the NFL’s speed, but it also speaks to another problem. That his coaches weren’t doing enough of the little things to keep him focused. Rest assured, that isn’t going to be an issue with Luke Getsy.

Even before his arrival in January as the Bears offensive coordinator, the 37-year-old coach brought a reputation for being organized and almost obsessively detailed. Regardless of position, every little thing a player does must be done right to achieve success. That is why he was such a big influence on star Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams. Now he is bringing that same mentality to the table with Fields.

Cameras caught a glimpse of it on Tuesday.

Sean Hammond of Shaw Local posted a video showing Getsy working with his QB in passing drills. A closer inspection reveals the coordinator identifying his feet being set at the top of his drop. Then he seemed to illustrate exactly how he wanted the ball thrown, which is immediately up past the right ear—no wasted motion or wind-up. Fields then did as commanded, running a play action fake and throwing a strike to a waiting assistant coach.

There was probably more information in those instructions but it is at least clear what Luke Getsy is aiming for. He wants Fields to operate with as much precision as humanly possible. Any way they can find to speed up his process is a good thing. Even before practices began, they changed how the quarterback stands. Rather than have his left leg back before a snap as he did in college and as a rookie, Getsy switched it to his right leg. This would help to smooth out his dropback as a right-handed passer.

Again, the details. The Bears offensive coordinator knows results won’t come immediately, but he is confident that this new approach will get Fields where he needs to be with enough time. Everything else becomes easier once the QB masters the little things about his position.
