Justin Fields is not the kind of guy that is going to start controversies. Anybody that has watched him in his press conferences sees a player with a remarkable grasp of his emotions. His answers are always are almost always delivered with the same even-keel style. However, the young quarterback isn’t stupid. Far from it. Media members have pointed out how he seems he handles dumb questions with careful but deliberate succinctness. This young man doesn’t choose his words randomly.
That is what made his comment on head coach Matt Nagy so interesting. On the surface, it felt like a standard answer. Fields was asked about his impressions of Nagy having worked together for a full season now. The quarterback seemed complimentary at first, calling him a “great coach.” However, his choice of words got really interesting after that.
“To the best of his ability.”
It is difficult not to read something into those words. Not the best I’ve been coached or simply coached me really well. That sentence has an overwhelming stink of the classic Bart Simpson meme. At least you tried.
Is Justin Fields subtly implying that he too believes Nagy is inadequate at his job? It wouldn’t be a shock. He’ll never say that outright. The quarterback isn’t that type of player. Yet it is hard to get past his choice of words there. As if he let his personal feelings seep into his answer for a split second.

Considering what Fields has been through this season from the questionable game plans to the poor in-game adjustments to the unnecessary hits and odd wide receiver route concepts. All of it has made life harder for him. It wouldn’t be a stretch at all to believe that while the rookie likes Nagy as a person, he might have a lower opinion of him as a head coach.
