Justin Fields is a talented young man. Anybody who watched him at Ohio State could see that. Through the first two games of the preseason, the Chicago Bears were seeing glimpses of the special player he could be. Not just as a runner but a passer. His downfield accuracy was something fans in this city just haven’t seen in a long time. For most of the first half against the Tennessee Titans in the preseason finale? They didn’t see much.
Then the 11th overall pick struck. With just under a minute to play, the Bears were driving deep into Titans territory. On first down, Fields was flushed to his right. He had a wide open lane to run the ball if he wished. Instead, he kept his eyes downfield and fired a pass to the end zone for tight end Jesper Horsted. The ball place and accuracy while on the run must be seen to be believed. A truly ridiculous toss.
Those throws aren’t nearly as easy as he made it seem.
Hats off to Horsted too. That was a fantastic catch on his part. The ball was in the one spot he could get it and he made the play. A big boost for his chances to be the final tight end on the roster. He also drew a pass interference on the same drive. This sequence was what the Bears were hoping for. Showcase more of what Justin Fields can do and satiate the fans for the time being.
Like it or not, Andy Dalton will still be the quarterback on opening night in Los Angeles. Given how the offensive line has played most of the preseason? It’s getting easier to understand their logic. If nothing else, this is proof that Fields has everything a team can want from a talent perspective. It is a matter of him mastering the mental challenges. Something that seems to be happening rapidly.
