The Chicago Bears haven’t made any big moves after their trade to acquire Nick Foles. Since then they’ve gone dark. Belief is they’ve begun to do some in-house work. Namely restructuring player contract and perhaps getting one or two extensions done. They need to free up some cap space. That said, there is still work to be done. Holes that need filling. One of them is the safety spot next to Eddie Jackson.
Ha Ha Clinton-Dix put his brief stint with the team to a close when he signed a new deal with the Dallas Cowboys. The Bears did bring back Deon Bush on a one-year deal, which could mean he might be in line to step up and take the job. However, they might think about alternatives too. One name that comes up quite a bit is Tony Jefferson.
Recently released by the Baltimore Ravens, the 28-year old has a proven track record as a strong safety. He’s good against the run, showing instinct and aggression attacking downhill. Exactly what the Bears need to help compliment Jackson. Where it gets interesting is Jefferson himself might have significant interest in coming to Chicago.
Jefferson is exactly what the Chicago Bears need
He’s a perfect box safety who handles everything around the line of scrimmage. Exactly what they had in Adrian Amos before he left. That allowed Jackson to play back in coverage more. An area he’s proven to be lethal. The big question with Jefferson is health. He missed most of 2019 with a torn ACL. This eventually resulted in him losing his job. So signing him is risky because of how hard it is for teams to conduct physicals due to COVID-19.

That said, when healthy he can be a force. He had 74 tackles, a sack, and an interception in 2018. Chuck Pagano would love using him as an extra attacker, something the safety has thrived at for years. He’s intelligent and rarely out of position. Just a rock solid football player.
