Unexpected Struggles Continue For Surprising Bears Starter During Camp

-

There have been many positives in camp so far, but there have also been some struggles. One key player needing to improve is last year’s top 10 pick, offensive tackle Darnell Wright. Wright has had difficulty winning matchups, particularly against Montez Sweat, who has been getting to the quarterback with ease. This issue persisted during Monday’s indoor practice due to rainy conditions. CHGO’s Nicholas Moreano reported on the practice, highlighting Wright’s ongoing struggles in camp.

My worst you guys, and I think a little before the practice I was talking about Montez Sweat but also Darnell Wright, at this point in camp, Darnell Wright cannot block Montez Sweat. Sweat has to let it up now because he is getting back in the backfield at such a fast rate you are just wondering where Darnell Wright is attempting to block this guy. We need to see a little more resistance from Wright.

This is not what you expect to see from a top 10 pick.

Montez Sweat is a challenging matchup. While it’s understandable that Wright might struggle occasionally, the main concern is the lack of resistance that Nick mentioned. Even though they’ve just started practicing in full pads, it’s vital to see more effort and improvement from Wright. On a positive note, it seems Montez Sweat has learned from his previous mistakes when it comes to making contact with Caleb Williams. Despite getting into the backfield effortlessly on Monday, he showed restraint and refrained from stripping the ball, even though he had the opportunity.

Which NFL teams were the Bears competing with in order to sign Montez Sweat?

Your imagination doesn’t count!

HBO’s “Hard Knocks: Preseason with the New York Giants” Episode 4 once again, reveals GM Ryan Poles as an impetuous, “perpetual rookie” and a GM who is an inept judge of NFL talent, proficiency and value.

Tune in. You’ll learn something.

Chris Morgan is not a good OL coach. This is the outcome of keeping a below avg OL coach who’s biggest struggle is teaching proper technique and footwork. And as much as all of u on here stand and clap for literally everything Poles does, at some point even a blind man will tell you Poles struggles mightily in OL talent evaluations. He was supposed to be an OL guru, yet the reality is the OL is his worst area. The best player on the OL was, and still is, TJ.. a Pace holdover (when he’s actually healthy). I’m not… Read more »

I’ve heard first hand that Sweat looks like Godzilla on the field in Chicago.
Now Wright has the body to handle it but does he have the skillz?
Right now it seems he does not.

What will the Offensive coaches do in the meantime to get Wright ready to deal with the biggest beasts around? TBD as this is probably the hardest task in the NFL.

I have pointed this out repeatedly. The problem IS NOT Darnell Wright. This kid looks like King Kong out there. The problem is his technique, his leverage, use of hands – they are all erratic. This is coaching. Ask yourself why Braxton Jones is the only young OL -man to do anything under this staff? And remember Teven Jenkins has done nothing but get moved and get hurt under this staff. Ryan Poles either inherited or drafted /UDFA signed at least 9 young OL prospects that all had either good traits, or lead the NFL (Wheatley/Davis) in pass pro in… Read more »

Sweat is far superior to Young in just about any scenario you want to dream up. He is worth a higher pick and worth more money; that’s why Young had trouble even signing on this offseason. $13m for a 1-year deal that doesn’t scream STUD or even a 3rd round pick, so it looks like SF is the one that got fleeced. The Bears never would have performed on defense the way they did the second half of last year without Sweat, and because of it, likely would have never had a shot at Sweat in Free Agency! He wanted… Read more »
