Tyrique Stevenson Interview Proves Caleb Williams’ Leadership Is No Joke

-

A lot of people in the locker room were concerned about the Chicago Bears’ decision to move on from Justin Fields. They felt the former 1st round pick had done a lot to earn respect in the building. He worked hard, did everything right, and put his body on the line every Sunday. They were skeptical the team could find somebody to replace that. Still, GM Ryan Poles asked them to trust him. He felt there was a golden opportunity for the organization to redefine expectations at that position. That is how things led to Caleb Williams.

Not only did the USC star have the arm strength, accuracy, and mobility of a potential top quarterback, but it was his natural charisma and ability to connect with teammates that stood out the most. If you weren’t sure whether that was a real thing, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson confirmed as much with a comment during a celebrity tournament for the American Cornhole League. Though he lost in the final to teammate Braxton Jones, he took satisfaction in knowing he knocked off a Green Bay Packer earlier in the tournament.

The fascinating part came during an interview after the final.

In case you hadn’t been paying attention, Williams started a new trend by ending all of his press conferences since being drafted by saying, “Da Bears.” It appears teammates have started to not only pick up on it, but embrace it.

Caleb Williams might be unconventional, but he’s genuine.

His impact on the Bears locker room in such a short time can’t be understated. Teammates have already noted his competitiveness, drive, and willingness to work. He’s in early, leaves late, and isn’t prone to making mistakes more than once. Even the starting defense has admitted he learns fast. Stevenson should know. The young quarterback has burned him in practice more than once. Yet it’s Williams’ outgoing nature and personable attitude that seems to win guys over. He comes across as someone you want to play for, not just with.

Coining his corny catchphrase might be a small thing, but it carries a big message. Step by step, Caleb Williams is making an impression on this team. He has them embracing the identity of being Chicago Bears. It is okay. That isn’t a crime. So what if others think it’s cringy? They don’t matter. Be proud of who you are and who you represent. It feels like a long time since someone genuinely embraced what it means to be a Bear. Williams has done so. Now, others are taking his cue.

@Dr Melhus Please stop exhibiting that deep historical knowledge of popular culture that you so freely express with such command. In today’s climate, it could get you arrested or even worse.

The catchphrase ‘Da Bears’ was coined in the Bill Swerski’s superfans sketch on SNL, featuring Joe Mantegna, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, and Robert Smigel, in a skit where they were parodying the ‘Chicago’ jargon by saying ‘da’ instead of ‘the’, and had a slavish devotion to the team, win or lose. The sketch became recurring, including actors such as George Wendt, Macaulay Cullen, and John Goodman. The sketch first aired on January 12, 1991, which was more than a decade before Caleb Williams was… Read more »

Why does Lambert use the word “proves” when he is quoting opinion?
He’s “proving” someone in a world of 8B people THINKS something?
