Tyler Scott didn’t get drafted as high as he wanted to. He felt he’d done enough to go earlier than the 4th round. Alas, NFL teams disagreed. However, things worked out for the best. He grew up loving the Chicago Bears, with old highlights of Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers being some of his favorites. There was an added benefit too. Scott would get a chance to play with Justin Fields. As an Ohio native, he was an avid Ohio State fan growing up. He followed their games right up until he started college, getting glimpses of Fields during his successful run there.
The knowledge that he’d be catching passes from the rising Bears star was exciting. It was even better when the quarterback was one of the first people to contact him after getting picked. Fields introduced himself and welcomed him to Chicago. When they got together in person for the first time, the quarterback gave his new receiver some tips about nutrition. The list of stories Scott already has about Fields is extensive, and he shared all of them with Adam Rank on The Sick Podcast.
Tyler Scott already has an idea of what to expect.
Fields will demand a lot of him but no more than he’ll demand of himself. The guy is a relentless competitor and willing to put in more work than anybody. He gets to practice before everybody and leaves after. Hours upon hours of film work. Trying to win every sprint during drills. The guy is determined to be one of the best. If he has to put his body through torture, then so be it. If you want to be somebody he respects and will throw the ball to, then be prepared to make similar sacrifices.
That is why Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet are his favorite targets. They’ve put in the time. Tyler Scott must do the same. He is a talented young man. Speed like that can’t be taught. It isn’t enough at this level. To be great, it’s about mastering the art of release and route-running. He has the tools for both. Most receivers aren’t willing to go those extra lengths. Maybe taking a cue from Fields is what he needs. The Bears are ready to give him every opportunity.
